Following the success of Iron Man, which revitalized Robert Downey Jr.’s career, he starred in Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes. The film was a hit, earning $524 million globally and even competing with Avatar, thanks to Ritchie’s unique directing style and the strong on-screen connection between Downey and Jude Law. This led to a sequel, Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, but it’s been 15 years and fans are still waiting for news about a third film. While they wait to see if Sherlock Holmes 3 will ever happen, they can now enjoy Ritchie’s newest movie on streaming services.
According to streaming data from FlixPatrol, Young Sherlock is currently the most popular TV show on Prime Video worldwide. It’s significantly more popular than other titles like 56 Days, Cross, and Fallout. The series, which consists of eight episodes, launched on March 4th and quickly became a hit with viewers.
Young Sherlock Is a Hit, but Will We Ever Get Sherlock Holmes 3?

The series Young Sherlock isn’t connected to the Sherlock Holmes movies directed by Guy Ritchie, but it still showcases his talent for telling compelling detective stories. Critics have generally liked the show (it has an 84% rating on Rotten Tomatoes), calling it a new and exciting approach to the classic Sherlock Holmes stories. It focuses on Holmes as a mischievous college student who becomes involved in mysteries alongside his friend, James Moriarty. Like other Guy Ritchie films, Young Sherlock features clever dialogue, fast-paced action, and a playful sense of humor, giving audiences a unique Sherlock Holmes experience while staying true to the spirit of the original stories.
I have to say, Ritchie has done it again with the casting in Young Sherlock! Hero Fiennes Tiffin and Dónal Finn are absolutely fantastic as Sherlock and Moriarty – they bring a really fresh and interesting take to their rivalry. They both just fit Ritchie’s style perfectly, and honestly, the show is a blast to watch. Plus, the supporting cast is incredible – you’ve got Colin Firth, Joseph Fiennes, Max Irons, and Zine Tseng, and everyone delivers, just like in his Sherlock Holmes films. It’s a really fun ride!
The enthusiastic response to Ritchie and his team revisiting the world of Sherlock Holmes will likely increase the demand for a third film starring Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law. While a Sherlock Holmes 3 has been discussed for years, it hasn’t moved forward. This is partly due to the time and commitment Downey spent with Marvel as Iron Man. The Marvel Cinematic Universe became hugely successful after Game of Shadows came out, and Downey’s role as Tony Stark kept him busy throughout the 2010s.
Robert Downey Jr. is back with Marvel, playing Doctor Doom in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars films, which might push back the release of Sherlock Holmes 3 even further. Downey will be focused on his Marvel commitments for the next few years, leaving little time for other big projects. He and Jude Law had great chemistry as Holmes and Watson, and fans would love to see them team up again. However, it’s been a long time since Game of Shadows, so there’s a real possibility the third movie might not happen. Luckily, viewers can still enjoy the world of Sherlock Holmes with Young Sherlock.
