The game is afoot! 14 years later, is taking on a new case with Prime Video’s Young Sherlock.
Director Guy Ritchie first brought his take on Sherlock Holmes to the screen in 2009, starring Robert Downey Jr. as the famous detective and Jude Law as Dr. Watson. The team quickly began working on a sequel, Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, which came out just two days later. However, plans for further sequels never came to fruition. Now, Ritchie has announced a new project set in the same universe: a prequel series called Young Sherlock, scheduled to premiere on March 4, 2026.
Okay, so the first glimpse of the movie is here, and it stars Hero Fiennes Tiffin – you might recognize him from the After series or even Harry Potter. The teaser is a really simple setup: we hear a bunch of different people saying his character’s name, and then finally, he gets to introduce himself. It’s a classic way to build anticipation, and honestly, it got me curious to see what this is all about.
The upcoming prequel introduces the famous detective as a rebellious student who unexpectedly finds himself investigating a murder. While he vows to change his ways as he begins his studies at Oxford, the trailer quickly shows that trouble – and plenty of the fast-paced action and surprising twists fans expect from director Guy Ritchie – are still very much in store.
I’m really excited about the new Sherlock Holmes series on Prime Video! It shows a young, flawed Holmes – he’s pretty rough around the edges – and it all kicks off when he gets caught up in a murder investigation that could land him in jail. This first case turns out to be way bigger than he expects, a real international conspiracy, and it all builds to a huge, life-changing climax. It’s going to be intense!
Set in 1870s Oxford and featuring travels abroad, the series shows the youthful, mischievous beginnings of the character who would eventually become the famous detective living at 221B Baker Street.
The upcoming film features Dónal Finn (from The Wheel of Time) as James Moriarty, Joseph Fiennes (The Handmaid’s Tale) as Silas Holmes, Natascha McElhone (Halo) as Cordelia Holmes, Zine Tseng (3 Body Problem) as Princess Gulun Shou’an, and Colin Firth (Kingsman) as Sir Bucephalus Hodge.
Ritchie directed the initial two episodes of Young Sherlock and also served as an executive producer. The series is adapted from the book series by Andrew Lane. Matthew Parkhill is the showrunner and another executive producer.
I was so excited to see the first sneak peek and learn when it’s coming out! Prime Video also announced that all eight episodes will drop at once on March 4th, which is amazing. And the best part? It’ll be available in over 240 countries around the world, so pretty much everyone can watch it!
