Gwyneth Paltrow Says She was Fired From Movie After Chris Martin Split

Gwyneth Paltrow didn’t always have a viva la vida mindset after her split from Chris Martin.

The actor from Shakespeare In Love revealed that the negative reaction to her 2014 divorce – which she and her husband famously called a “conscious uncoupling” – led to her losing a part in a movie.

Gwyneth Paltrow revealed on Amy Poehler’s podcast, Good Hang, that she almost starred in a film shortly after her public separation from Chris Martin. She explained that due to negative press surrounding their split, the movie’s distributor worried it would be too controversial to release.

The actress, 53, didn’t say which film it was, but she lightheartedly mentioned, “It was a good time, because I was going through a divorce and then lost my job.”

Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin, parents to Apple, 21, and Moses, 19, received a lot of attention for using the term “conscious uncoupling” when they announced their separation on Gwyneth’s website, Goop. The phrase became well-known and is still used today, even though their divorce was finalized in 2016. Now, in retrospect, Gwyneth realizes why the term bothered some people.

She explained that hearing a different approach to divorce – after going through a difficult one herself – could feel like an accusation. She likened this to ‘implicit learning,’ where someone might instinctively feel they’re being told they did something wrong, even if that wasn’t the intention. She acknowledged this was understandably upsetting for people, as it forced them to confront potentially painful self-reflection.

Gwyneth Paltrow, married to Brad Falchuk, has talked about this phrase before. She’s shared that she didn’t come up with it herself, or with her ex-husband Chris Martin. Instead, she first heard it from a previous therapist, and wasn’t initially a fan of the idea.

She admitted the term felt pretentious and difficult to accept, as she wrote in her 2022 essay for British Vogue. However, she was more interested in the idea behind it. Could they separate without completely losing their connection? Could they still function as a family, even if they weren’t a couple? They decided to find out.

As promised, she and Chris have successfully worked together to raise Apple and Martin since their separation, and their children have grown to value this teamwork over the years.

Gwyneth Paltrow said in an interview last May that her children take pride in Goop being a leader in its field. She explained they aim for a balance between freedom of expression and good manners, prioritizing both education and individuality within a structured environment.
