Gwyneth Paltrow Shares When She Felt a “Big Vacancy” in Her Career

Gwyneth Paltrow is looking back at the cinematic universe she’s built.

Actress Gwyneth Paltrow discussed her career and how being a mother to her two children, Apple, 21, and Moses, 19 (with ex-husband Chris Martin), changed the way she chooses roles in movies.

Gwyneth Paltrow, 53, recently shared that she significantly reduced her work commitments. In a January 9th interview with Demi Moore, as reported by People magazine, she reflected on her busy pre-children career. She realized she had made an incredible number of films – often four or five each year – before starting a family.

Looking back, I realize I didn’t allow myself the space to really plan things out. I was just swept up in the momentum of life, and when my daughter came along, I knew I needed to pause. So, I took a complete three-year break to focus on her and recharge.

After taking some time off, Gwyneth Paltrow started acting again, choosing roles filmed closer to home so she could be with her family. While she was glad she made that choice for herself and her children, she didn’t anticipate new challenges arising as her kids, Apple and Martin, got older.

So, Marty Supreme director Josh Safdie approached her at the perfect time.

After my children left for college, I felt a real loss of direction and didn’t know what to do with myself,” she explained. “Then Josh Safdie contacted me, and I realized how completely unaware I was of what was going on.

The Academy Award-winning actress returned to films in 2025 with a movie based on the life of table tennis player Marty Reisman. Timothée Chalamet, 28, played the role of a ping pong champion, while Gwyneth Paltrow starred as Kay Stone, an actress making a comeback to the screen – a role she felt was perfectly suited for her.

I really sympathized with Kay and what she went through. Her situation felt incredibly sad and distant, and then she decided to return. It also mirrored my own experience of not giving up, which added another layer to it all.

Although she valued playing such an open and emotional character, her son, Moses, didn’t enjoy watching the more romantic scenes in the movie.

Gwyneth Paltrow playfully described how her son reacted to the intimate scenes in her movies. During her December 15th interview on Late Night With Seth Meyers, she imitated him covering his eyes and jokingly said, “Yeah, not into that.”
