Hacks is poised to break a long-standing tradition for the HBO Max comedy drama.
Hannah Einbinder and Jean Smart, the stars of Hacks, have revealed that the upcoming fifth season will change the dynamic between their characters, Ava and Deborah. Throughout the show, the comedy has always centered on the often-contentious relationship between Ava Daniels and Deborah Vance, and season 5 will be a departure from that established pattern.
Season 5 of Hacks will feature a shift in the relationship between Ava and Deborah. According to an interview with Tatiana Hullender from ScreenRant, Ava and Deborah will be working together, sharing common goals. This collaboration will also drive Ava’s character development.
Towards the end of season four, Deborah and Ava nearly broke up again, but a misunderstanding prevented it. Considering that, how solid is their relationship as they head into the final season?
I think their partnership is really solid. They work well together and are effectively pursuing their shared objectives, which is great to see.
Before the new season began, were there any unanswered questions about Ava’s storyline that you were hoping to explore?
I really just want the best for her character – for her to be happy and find fulfillment. That’s always been my focus each season, hoping she’s doing okay and being treated well. Because the writing is so good, I always approach each season with an open mind.
John Benjamin Hickey, who plays Marcus, agrees with Hannah Einbinder, explaining that in season 5, Deborah will finally understand how effectively she and Ava work as a team, and how crucial that relationship will be as the show nears its end. He describes their connection as almost like a family, hinting at how their bond might evolve in the remaining episodes.
Last season, Ava and Deborah nearly split up again, but a false alarm about someone’s death brought them back together. Now, the question is how solid their relationship is heading into the new season.
Jean Smart believes Deborah faces a critical moment where she must acknowledge just how much she relies on Ava, both to Ava herself and, more importantly, to herself. This deep need for each other creates a powerful connection, similar to the bond between a mother and child.
The fourth season of Hacks concluded with a heated argument between Ava and Deborah, sparked by Deborah’s drunken criticism of Ava’s comedy career. The following day, a false news report claimed Deborah had died, and the resulting obituary was unflattering to her accomplishments. This shocking event ultimately sets the stage for Ava and Deborah to reconcile after years of conflict.
The new trailer for Hacks season 5 shows Deborah returning to Las Vegas. This time, she’s determined to shape how people remember her career, focusing on the positive moments. Ava will be by her side as a supportive partner, a change from past seasons where they often clashed.
This finale is a perfect conclusion to the popular HBO Max series, which became the streaming service’s longest-running exclusive show. The series has also received widespread critical acclaim, with Smart winning four Emmys in a row for her acting, and seasons one and three both taking home Golden Globes for Best Musical or Comedy Television Series.
According to both Einbinder and Smart, the final season of Hacks promises a deeply emotional connection between Ava and Deborah. The season appears to be tightly focused on their main storyline, which will likely lead to both characters reshaping their careers as comedians.
The fifth and final season of Hacks begins streaming on HBO Max on Thursday, April 9th at 9 p.m. Eastern Time. Each week, a new episode will be released, with two episodes dropping on both April 30th and May 7th. The series will conclude with its final episode on Thursday, May 28th, bringing the main characters’ journeys to an end.
Considering how critically acclaimed Hacks has been, the comments from its stars, Jean Smart and Hannah Einbinder, suggest the show will likely have a satisfying finale. While Ava and Deborah haven’t always agreed, this new development in their relationship points to a powerful connection that will be central to the series’ conclusion.
