As a big fan of *Hades 2*, I’ve been really digging into how to build the best character. What I’ve learned is that figuring out a good strategy and focusing on your strengths is super important. The game gives you tons of options – different weapons, Boons, Arcana, and other upgrades – so you can really customize your playstyle. I’ve found that keeping my distance from bosses is often the key to survival, and for Melinoe, I’ve been having the most success with a ranged build. It lets me take down enemies from afar and avoid a lot of damage. I’m happy to share what I’ve learned if you’re also looking to create a strong ranged build!
As you get further in *Hades 2*, you’ll unlock more ways to customize your character, with new weapons, weapon variations, and abilities becoming available. This means your best character build will likely change as you play. But if you’re focusing on a ranged playstyle, some Nocturnal Arms and Boons are particularly effective. Here are my recommendations to help you create a powerful ranged build in *Hades 2*.
Best Nocturnal Arms for Ranged Attacks in Hades 2

Many of the weapons available at Nocturnal Arms can attack from a distance, but some are more effective than others. If you prefer to fight from afar, I suggest choosing one of these weapons for nighttime battles.
- Witch’s Staff – versatile early game weapon with decent ranged capabilities
- Umbral Flames – fully ranged option with magical blows from afar
- Black Coat – late-game unlock with the ability to seek targets at range
Honestly, I’m really loving the Witch’s Staff in this part of the game. I found the Umbral Flames a bit awkward up close, and the Black Coat just takes too long to become available. By the time you *do* unlock it, you’re probably already comfortable with the other weapons. Plus, I’m not the biggest fan of its futuristic look, but hey, it’s definitely got some serious power if you’re looking for that! I just personally prefer the Witch’s Staff for how useful it is in lots of different situations.
Best Arcana Cards for a Ranged Build

Arcana abilities, unlike Boons, are reliable each night. If you unlock and use an Arcana card, you’re guaranteed its benefits. This offers more consistency to your character build in *Hades 2*, compared to the unpredictable nature of Boons from the Gods. Certain Arcana cards are particularly useful for fast movement and dodging enemies, especially if you focus on ranged attacks.
- IV: Eternity – Slows foes down when using your Omega moves, helping keep them at bay
- VI: The Furies – Increases how much damage you deal to foes trapped in your Casts, helping you ensnare and strike down foes at range
- VII: The Messenger – Lets you briefly become impervious when using Casts, and increases your move speed for better dodging
- XI: The Swift Runner – Increases the speed of your Spring and helps you pass through foes that block your path
These cards are great for increasing your damage and attack speed from a distance, letting you fight enemies without getting too close. I suggest combining them with the Arcana cards you already like to create a powerful ranged setup. I personally find XIII: The Centaur really useful for its healing, and XII: Death is a good pick for boosting your ability to avoid damage. Both cards are strong additions to any build and will help Melinoe survive longer.
Which Boons to Prioritize for a Ranged Build in Hades 2

Boons can be a little unpredictable in your build, as the gods and goddesses who appear each night, and the boons they offer, are random. However, when preparing Melinoe for ranged damage, there are certain types of boons that are particularly helpful to look for.
Boons that Deal Cast Damage
Many of the Gods and Goddesses grant abilities that add extra damage to your attacks. If you’re fighting from a distance, trapping enemies in your attack range is useful for keeping them away. Why not also make those attacks deal damage at the same time? Zeus, Hestia, and Poseidon are especially good choices, offering powerful elemental abilities that quickly damage enemies caught in your attack.
Generally, you can’t combine different Boons, so you’ll have to choose the first one you get or use another Boon to swap it out. However, Demeter’s Gust ability is great because it adds to your overall cast damage, so I try to include it whenever possible. Also, some Boons let you control where your cast lands instead of it appearing at your feet, which is really helpful for keeping your distance from enemies.
Boons that Extend Your Attack & Special Range
Some upgrades in *Hades 2* will extend the range of your basic Attack or Special, which is really useful for characters built around ranged combat. It lets you hit multiple enemies with a single attack. The Daedalus Hammer and boons from Hermes can both help with this. I particularly recommend Daedalus’ Cross-Cataclysm, as it makes your special attack hit in two directions, reaching even more enemies.
Boons that Increase Speed & Dodge
Moving quickly is a big advantage when you’re trying to avoid enemy attacks, and having a better chance to dodge helps too. Look for Boons that boost your speed or dodging ability. I particularly like the “Ice Queen” Boon from Hera, which appears later in the game and gives you a shield to block one hit when you enter a new area. Hermes, being the swift messenger god, often offers Boons that increase your speed as well.
Best Familiar for Fighting at Range in Hades 2

Okay, so I’ve been checking out the Familiars, and honestly, each one – Frino, Toula, and Hecuba – has its strengths and weaknesses. They all help you gather different stuff, and they each bring something unique to a fight. When it comes to supporting you from afar, they’re all useful in their own way. It really just comes down to how *you* like to play – what you need most in a game. Let me break down how each Familiar helps in battle…
- Frinos – Sometimes absorbs an instance of damage for you, including Hecate’s transformation spell. Helpful, but not necessarily as noticeable in large clusters of foes or with Guardians.
- Toula – Attacks your foes, but only for a brief time after you sprint through her. She also grants you an extra Death Defiance. Toula is my personal favorite for ranged builds, since she’ll attack even if you’re nowhere near the enemy.
- Hecuba – Occasionally stuns your enemies. Personally, my least favorite options, but can be helpful in large hoards of foes.
- Raki – Increases your critical chances and pecks your foes for damage. Similar usefulness to Toula in terms of doing damage, but doesn’t offer Death Defiance.
- Gale – Blocks some attacks, then counterattacks. Similar to Frinos, but with more damage ability.
I usually prefer Toula for ranged builds in *Hades 2*, but Frinos can be useful too. Once you unlock Gale, their blocks and counterattacks work well together. However, I generally prioritize having as many ways to avoid damage as possible.
The ideal setup really depends on how you like to play. Personally, I’ve had a lot of success against Time using a combination of Boons, Nocturnal Arms, Arcana, and Familiars.
