When Hades 2 first launched in Early Access, it had a preliminary ending, hinting at a much larger story. Now, with the full game release, players can finally experience that complete narrative. Melinoe’s journeys through the underworld and beyond culminate in the game’s true ending. The story isn’t told in a straightforward way; you’ll need to talk to characters and explore important locations to piece together the plot. However, the story and its conclusion are definitely worth the effort.
In *Hades 2*, you’re ultimately working towards two major final battles. First, you’ll help Melinoe defeat Chronos and reclaim the Underworld. Then, her family will ask for your assistance with a separate conflict on Olympus. To see the complete ending, you need to beat both Chronos and conquer Olympus. However, defeating Chronos only once isn’t enough, as he’s an immortal Titan and will keep returning.
Hades 2 Follows a Protagonist Who Has Trained for One Purpose Her Entire Life

Melinoe has little memory of her original family, as the Titan Chronos split them apart when she was a child. She was then raised by Hecate, a powerful witch, and together they’re trying to understand and change the nature of Time itself. They’re receiving help from various Greek Gods, Goddesses, and other famous figures from mythology. Because of Chronos’ attack on the Underworld, most of Melinoe’s relatives believe she didn’t survive, and she’s now meeting them for the very first time as she begins her important work.
To fully understand the story of *Hades 2*, talk to all the characters, especially those with exclamation points above their heads in the Crossroads. These conversations reveal Melinoe’s history-her conflicts with Nemesis, her ties to Artemis and Selene, and her relationship with Hecate. Important story moments, like your first victory over Chronos, will also unlock new dialogue from characters, giving you a more complete picture of Melinoe’s journey.
This conversation reveals Melinoe’s strong family loyalty and her unwavering mission: to defeat Chronos and restore her family’s status in the Underworld. Despite being a creature of the Underworld and normally unable to venture to the surface, she’s determined enough to learn a spell that allows her to overcome this limitation. Melinoe uses her magic to break the rules of her divine lineage and achieve seemingly impossible feats, ultimately hoping to defeat Time itself.
Melinoe Must Connect With Her Brother to Truly Stop Time

After Melinoe initially defeats Chronos, the real reason for her quest starts to become clear. While Chronos is briefly undone, she connects with her brother, Zagreus, in the past. This connection is central to the plan she and Hecate have been working on. Melinoe asks her brother to investigate Chronos during his time, before the Titan returns and overthrows Hades. As a player, this means you’ll need to defeat Chronos multiple times to collect resources and information for a final spell that will permanently defeat him. For Melinoe, it means trying to convince a brother she doesn’t remember who she is that he can help her complete her mission.
After that point, progressing through the Chronos storyline revolves around repeatedly defeating him. With each victory, you’ll collect more Zodiac Sand and have conversations with Zagreus about his quest to understand Chronos. Chronos is in hiding, recovering from the Gods’ previous attack, but Melinoe believes Zagreus holds the answer to permanently sealing him away. As you continue, it becomes apparent that even the other Gods don’t fully understand Melinoe’s plan. She’s working with Hecate and Zagreus to discover the secret behind the Dissolution of Time, a ritual that will prevent Chronos from returning after his defeat.
Okay, so the first part of this final spell needs 5 Z-Sand, which basically means I had to beat Chronos five times. The other ingredient was tricky at first, though. Alongside collecting the Z-Sand, I also needed to find a weapon strong enough to take down Chronos. Once I got all the Z-Sand, it hit me – I needed Gigaros! That got me one step closer to actually beating Time itself… well, almost!
Hades 2 Has Two Final Bosses, Who You Must Defeat Multiple Times

To unlock the game’s true ending, you’ll need to obtain Entropy, which is only possible by defeating Typhon, the final surface boss. This requires learning a new incantation, Disintegration of Monstrosity, for which you’ll need 4 V-Lens and the Gigaros weapon. Similar to the Chronos fight, you’ll have to defeat Typhon repeatedly to gather enough V-Lens to cast the incantation. Be warned: Typhon is an incredibly challenging monster, even tougher than Chronos! The game hides his health bar, making it difficult to track your progress. However, with help from the Gods, Melinoe can ultimately overcome Typhon.
Like many Roguelike games, you’ll face the final two bosses, Chronos and Typhon, repeatedly before finishing the game. To unlock the ending, you’ll need to defeat Chronos a minimum of 7 times and Typhon at least 5 times to gather all the necessary materials.
Okay, so I finally figured out how to *really* finish *Hades 2*! You need to get Gigaros – Zagreus gives it to Melinoe after you beat Chronos a bunch of times. Then it’s on to Typhon, where you grab Entropy and cast Dissolution of Time. After that, Melinoe gets one last showdown with Chronos, and *that’s* when you unlock the true ending and all the post-game stuff! It took me a while, but it’s so worth it!
The True Hades 2 Ending Ensures a Continued Roguelike Postgame

Some players might be surprised by how the battle against Time concludes. Despite figuring out how to control time, Melinoe chooses to spare Chronos after a short discussion, meaning you don’t actually defeat Time. While this can feel a little anticlimactic, completely destroying time probably wouldn’t be a good idea! This ending also sets up the ‘true ending’ as just the start, letting players continue playing after the main story. This includes finally defeating Typhon and getting to meet the Greek Gods and Goddesses on Mount Olympus.
Once Melinoe shows Chronos mercy, he transforms into a gentler, more cheerful being. He then asks Melinoe to destroy the last traces of his former, harsher self that still linger in the Underworld. This change is due to time travel and choices Zagreus made earlier, which showed Chronos a different way to be. Now, Chronos needs to ensure this new path stays clear, and Melinoe is the perfect person to deal with the remaining, hostile fragments of his past.
The ending might not satisfy everyone, but it’s definitely a surprise. Even though the main story is finished, there’s still plenty to do in the Underworld – you can complete remaining quests from the Fates and the Oath of the Unseen. This also gives you more time to develop relationships with characters and fully explore everything *Hades 2* has to offer.
