Haikyu Has Turned Volleyball an Olympic Hit, New Data Shares

As a seasoned anime enthusiast with a soft spot for sports dramas, I can confidently say that Haikyu has truly outdone itself in captivating the global audience and redefining the popularity of volleyball, especially among Gen Z. Having grown up watching classics like Slam Dunk, it’s both humbling and exhilarating to witness a new generation of sports anime taking center stage at the Paris Olympics.

At the ongoing Olympics in Paris, various summer sports are garnering significant attention as anticipated. Traditional favorites like swimming and gymnastics remain popular, but there’s an unexpected surge in interest – volleyball. It appears that the sport has captured the internet’s fascination, and a recent survey points to the anime series “Haikyu” as the driving force behind this momentum.

Mainichi’s coverage of volleyball’s popularity at the Olympics revealed that a survey conducted this year across 33 nations polled approximately 25,000 people. When inquired about the upcoming Paris Olympics, Generation Z showed the most interest in volleyball. Millennials and baby boomers, on the other hand, expressed preference for track and field events.

It seems that Gen Z has a strong interest in volleyball during the Olympics, and it’s because of an anime called Haikyu! Our friends at Mainichi found this out by speaking with fans on-site. When Team Japan played, the anime was always trending, and it sparked a love for volleyball among fans beyond Japan’s borders. From Italy to Brazil, Haikyu brought attention to volleyball, and its popularity led to an increase in fans. Now, some of those same fans have purchased tickets for the Olympics, and others have dressed up as characters from Haikyu while cheering on their favorite teams!

Showing dedication, there were no Slam Dunk cosplays spotted at the Paris Olympics this year. However, keep looking, we’re on the lookout for those showcasing their love for Sakuragai.

It’s undeniable that “Haikyu” has made a significant mark in the sports world, and this was evident during the Paris Olympics. To date, no other series has matched its legacy in the realm of sports-related anime. If you haven’t jumped on the bandwagon yet, now’s your chance! You can read the entire series on the Shonen Jump app, or stream all episodes on Hulu and Crunchyroll as well.
