The ending actually changes things from Half-Life 2: Episode 2, and it feels like Valve cleverly created a way to make Half-Life 3 without being stuck in a dead end.
The way Alyx ended felt very deliberate, suggesting the creators might have a plan for Half-Life 3. There have been reports from people within Valve that Half-Life 3 is currently being developed, though we don’t know if that’s true. It would be surprising if they ended the next game on another cliffhanger without resolving it. They noticed Valve usually promotes big events and sales on the main Steam page banner, but currently, the banner is empty for several weeks, from November 18th to December 8th, which is unusual. Adding to the speculation, Valve unexpectedly moved its annual fall sale to September, claiming it was a deliberate choice without explaining why.
