Halo Studios is continuing to focus on developing Halo: Campaign Evolved and hasn’t shared any updates since its initial announcement last year. Recently, Rebs Gaming, who reported that Abstraction Games and Virtuos are helping with development, shared some possible new information about the game, particularly regarding the new prequel missions.
These three new missions take place before the main story and star Master Chief and Sgt. Johnson, introducing some fresh enemies. One mission seems to revisit the long-standing competition between the ODST and SPARTAN forces. The Jiralhanae, or Brutes – who weren’t in the original Halo but debuted in Halo 2 – are also expected to appear in these missions.
Interestingly, this might link to the events in the story Halo: Contact Harvest, which takes place almost thirty years before Combat Evolved. That story also features Sergeant Johnson and reveals important details about Forerunner artifacts. Apparently, the new game will also introduce a completely original Covenant faction, with the developers focusing their efforts on creating it from the ground up.
Fans hoping for a visual update to the original Combat Evolved will likely be disappointed. Halo Studios is using character models from Halo Infinite – specifically, the Banished Covenant and UNSC Marines – instead of creating new ones. According to Rebs Gaming, despite criticism of the gameplay reveal, there are no plans to change this and they are sticking with the Infinite models.
This new project feels a bit like what 343 did with the Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary remake. They didn’t use the original game’s graphics for that either, and instead pulled assets from other Halo games. Since Campaign Evolved is supposedly coming out before September, I don’t expect them to suddenly change course now. I’ll be keeping an eye out for more news, so stay tuned!
