Okay, so I’m seriously excited – a full-on remake of Halo: Combat Evolved is actually happening! It’s going to look amazing with completely updated 4K graphics, and you can even play the whole campaign with up to four friends. The coolest part? It’s not just for Xbox – it’s coming to other platforms too, and it’s built in Unreal Engine 5! It reminds me a lot of how they did the Oblivion remaster, although they haven’t officially said if the same studio is working on it.
The game is built on the original code from Halo: Combat Evolved, but uses the Unreal Engine 5 to create its graphics. Switching to Unreal Engine 5, combined with that original Halo code, will help the team continue developing the game.
Halo Studios isn’t starting from scratch with Unreal Engine – they’ve experimented with it before. According to game director Greg Hermann in an interview with Xbox Wire, combining these tools with their existing resources is key to ensuring the future of the Halo franchise for years to come.
This ensures the remake stays true to the feeling of the original game. While the levels have been expanded to support more players, the core gameplay should be instantly recognizable as Halo: Combat Evolved.
Hermann stated that upcoming Halo games will keep innovating with new technology, but will always stay true to the series’ signature gameplay, improving it when necessary so players can truly experience it.
The remastered version of Halo: Combat Evolved will be released in 2026 for Xbox Series X/S, PC, and PlayStation 5. Unlike the original, this version won’t include competitive multiplayer. However, it does feature three brand-new missions that take place before the main story, introducing new gameplay elements, enemies, and environments, and starring Master Chief and Sgt. Johnson.
