Whenever a new Halo game is announced, fans immediately hope for better graphics, smoother gameplay, updated controls, and a story that stays true to the original. While those improvements are great – and Halo: Combat Evolved already looks like a huge leap forward – I think something important is being missed in the discussions about sprint buttons, weapon noises, and other details. This new Halo might finally give one of the series’ scariest enemies the truly frightening experience they deserve.
The Flood, often considered the most frightening enemy in the Halo series, hasn’t always felt as threatening as intended. While the original Combat Evolved presented a terrifying idea – a parasite that consumes and transforms everything it encounters – the Xbox’s limited technology held it back. What should have been a relentless alien invasion often appeared as awkwardly animated, bouncy blobs with poor accuracy. However, Halo: Campaign Evolved boasts the power to visually realize the Flood’s horror and finally deliver on their terrifying potential.
The Flood Are Back—And This Time, They’ll Actually Be Terrifying

I’ll never forget the first time I encountered the Flood in the original Halo: Combat Evolved. It was seriously one of the most chilling experiences in gaming for me. Discovering what they’d done through those creepy audio logs, seeing the blood everywhere, and stumbling upon those terrified marines… it really got to me as a kid. Then, all of a sudden, they were everywhere! Those screeching, flailing creatures just came out of nowhere, and it felt like the game had suddenly turned into a full-blown horror game. But looking back now, while it was super scary at the time, it doesn’t quite hold up the same way it used to.
Looking back, the Flood in the original Halo was more of a frightening idea than a truly scary experience. The animation felt clunky, the sound effects weren’t very advanced, and while the creatures were designed to be unsettling, they didn’t look realistic enough to be genuinely horrifying. Modern gamers have seen much more terrifying monsters in games like Dead Space and The Last of Us, raising the standard for horror. Now, a remake of Halo: Combat Evolved has the opportunity to reintroduce the Flood and actually scare a new audience, particularly if it includes a cooperative gameplay mode.
This remake has the potential to truly stand out. Picture yourself exploring a decaying Forerunner structure with flickering lights and the unsettling sounds of the Flood creeping around above you. Imagine witnessing marines not simply being defeated by the Flood, but actively changing – their limbs contorting, armor merging with their bodies, and their voices becoming monstrous. With today’s technology, a new Halo could deliver this level of visual detail and atmosphere, finally making the Flood the terrifying enemy they were always meant to be.
Better Lighting and Sharper Visuals Lead to a Better Horror Atmosphere

A surprisingly underappreciated element of what makes Halo scary is its use of lighting, and this goes beyond just the Flood. The original game used basic lighting to set the mood, but the remake can really build on that with its improved lighting technology to dramatically change how environments feel. Levels like 343 Guilty Spark and The Library are already among the most frightening in the series, and Halo: Combat Evolved has the potential to create a truly terrifying atmosphere.
The remake’s advanced lighting and effects – like realistic shadows, fog, and global illumination – really amplify the sense of dread and suspense compared to the original game. Picture yourself entering the infected containment area, and seeing your flashlight beam struggle through dense, floating spores. Or seeing sparks fly from broken machinery, momentarily revealing something moving in the darkness. Even though I don’t usually enjoy horror games, these are the kinds of experiences I’m eager to have in this new version.
Sound design can significantly increase the feeling of fear in the game. Using advanced 3D audio, players could hear the Flood moving through the environment – crawling in vents, making distorted human-like sounds, or screaming just beyond view. This uncertainty about where the Flood will appear next could make even well-known levels terrifying. While players are eager for improvements to weapons and new story missions, it’s these kinds of immersive sound effects and environmental details that could truly change how we experience the Flood, Halo’s most frightening enemy.
New Content Means New Ways for the Flood to Scare

When Halo Studios hinted that Campaign Evolved would include “expanded missions and new content,” fans immediately started guessing. While most people think it might involve prequel stories or more battles with the Covenant, I’m hoping for a new mission featuring the Flood. A full new campaign focused on the Flood is unlikely, but even a short mission or a revamped existing sequence would be fantastic.
The Flood’s story in the first Halo game was interesting, but it ended quickly. Even if we don’t see the Flood return as a major threat, I hope the developers expand on those missions and adjust the timing to build more suspense. It would be amazing to play a short mission as a marine who’s among the first to encounter the Flood and experience the terror of discovering this ancient enemy. Halo has always hinted at horror elements, and a revamped Halo Campaign: Evolved could really lean into that here.
Even if a side mission doesn’t involve the Flood directly, improvements to enemy AI and the way the game tells its story could make existing Flood encounters feel brand new. In the original Halo: Combat Evolved, the Flood were limited by the technology of the time. But now, with advancements over the last twenty years, Halo: Combat Evolved has the potential to make the Flood genuinely frightening—to show players that they aren’t just another enemy, but a terrifying, universe-spanning threat at the heart of the Halo story.
