Halo showrunner makes plea to commissioners following show’s cancellation after two seasons

The creator of the ‘Halo’ television series has publicly asked the entertainment industry for understanding after the show was cancelled following its second season.

The popular video game series was adapted into a show that premiered on Paramount+ in 2022. It quickly became a hit, receiving excellent reviews and attracting a large audience for the streaming service.

Season 2 came out in February 2024 to mixed reactions, and the show was canceled a month later, even though the season finale left viewers with an unresolved ending.

Steven Kane, the showrunner, is encouraging those in the television industry to prioritize creativity over data when developing new shows. He warns that an over-reliance on data could lead to a reluctance to take risks and try new things.

During an interview at the Seriencamp TV festival in Germany (as reported by Deadline), Kane explained that adapting a video game was challenging. He felt the weight of ’20 years of history’ and the expectations of a dedicated fanbase across various platforms.

He warned that fans will likely dislike your initial work. It’s just part of the job, and the company also doesn’t want to ruin the established brand – that creates a lot of stress. You have a big obligation to respect the fanbase.

However, data driven decisions from those higher up are having the bigger effect.

“It’s when you are told the algorithm says the script is boring because ChatGPT says so,” he said.

Always consider your audience’s perspective. When you receive feedback, don’t just address the surface-level comment—dig deeper to understand the underlying reason why something isn’t resonating with them.

He explained that producers worry viewers will quickly get bored and switch to their phones, so they constantly ask him to repeat explanations to keep things engaging.

“How do you pander to that?”

Kane urged the people making decisions about the show’s future to remember the importance of emotional connection and relatable stories.

I’ve been following Kyle Kane’s work for a while now, and I’m really impressed with his range! Besides the incredible ‘Halo’ series, he was also involved in bringing ‘Jack Ryan’ – with John Krasinski – to the small screen, and even earlier, he adapted ‘The Last Ship’ from William Brinkley’s novel. It’s clear he’s great at taking popular stories and making them work in a new format.

Paramount+ didn’t publicly explain why they cancelled ‘Halo,’ simply announcing that the show wouldn’t be returning for a third season.

We’re incredibly proud of this epic series. We want to thank our partners at Xbox, 343 Industries, and Amblin Television, as well as showrunner and executive producer David Wiener and his team. A special thanks goes to the entire cast, led by Pablo Schreiber as Master Chief, and the phenomenal crew for their incredible dedication and hard work.

“We wish everyone the best going forward.”

Halo is available to watch in full now on Paramount+.
