Han Solo’s Most Confusing Line in The Empire Strikes Back Isn’t “I Know”

As a movie enthusiast, I can’t help but appreciate Star Wars for its knack for crafting intricate characters. While it’s no secret that the Emperor Palpatine is simply bad to the core, his minions – Darth Maul, Count Dooku, and Darth Vader – each have compelling tales that delve into their internal battles with morality. It’s not just the villains who get the thrill of moral ambiguity; even our heroes in this distant galaxy stray from the path of righteousness and must find their way back to the light. In Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Luke Skywalker grapples with darkness after allowing Ben Solo to succumb to it. Han Solo, Ben’s father, shares some responsibility for this, but unlike Luke, Han has a long history of making mistakes before the sequel trilogy begins.

In Star Wars: A New Hope, as soon as I stepped into the cantina and laid eyes on Han, it was apparent that this fellow wasn’t your average upstanding citizen. He had a knack for keeping company with questionable characters and a trigger-happy disposition – fire first, ask questions later seemed to be his motto. Yet, even when he attempted to make the right choices, Han often found himself stumbling into the wrong ones. This ambiguity was particularly evident in Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back.

Han Backs the Wrong Horse in Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back

At the beginning of “The Empire Strikes Back,” the Rebellion is in flight due to the aftermath of the Battle of Yavin. They establish a base on Hoth, a planet with harsh conditions they believe the Empire won’t target. However, an Imperial probe droid arrives, leading to an eventual Empire attack. Despite this, Han Solo, Leia Organa, Chewbacca, and C-3PO manage to flee aboard the Millennium Falcon. Struggling to find a new location, Han suggests they seek refuge in Cloud City on Bespin, as it’s run by his old friend Lando Calrissian, who might be able to hide them temporarily.

As a die-hard film enthusiast, let me share my take on a scene from “The Empire Strikes Back.” Unbeknownst to Han, the Imperial forces have already set foot on Bespin and have made a deal with Lando to hand over our beloved rogue smuggler. Upon arriving at Cloud City, Leia begins to feel a sense of discomfort, so she confides in Han about her unease. However, Han dismisses these strange occurrences, trusting his friend Lando. As they continue their conversation, he seems distracted and whispers something indistinct. Activating the closed-captioning, it becomes clear that he murmurs, “Besides, we’ll soon be gone.” Although this line might not seem significant at first glance in the grand scheme of “Empire,” it serves to underline Han’s blind trust, a factor that comes back to haunt him later in the film.

Star Wars Fans Have Been Trying to Figure Out What Han Said for 45 Years

A video shared by Star Wars enthusiast Jen Markham on TikTok has shed light on the fact that some fans didn’t realize what Han said to Leia in “The Empire Strikes Back” until it was streamed on Disney+. The comments are filled with people either figuring out the dialogue for the first time or feeling relieved they weren’t alone in struggling to understand the conversation. Although the reason might be a subpar ADR session or a malfunctioning boom mic, there’s no disputing that “The Empire Strikes Back” left certain aspects of Han’s narrative unclear for some viewers.

The reason Han’s earlier muttering is often overlooked over the years is because a remarkably memorable statement from him comes up shortly afterward, making his initial mumbling easier to forget. After the Empire reveals itself, Darth Vader permits Boba Fett to freeze Han in carbonite and transport him to Jabba the Hutt. Before the process is finished, Leia confesses her love for Han, to which he responds simply with “I know.” This line is one of Star Wars’ most famous, but it can be hard to comprehend because it’s evident that Han shares the same feelings, but can’t express them openly. Clarifying this dialogue earlier in the movie would have aided understanding since Leia makes her revelation immediately after Han gets stabbed by Lando.
