Hands On: Dragon Quest 7 Reimagined Could Be the Series’ Best Remake Yet

Okay, so Dragon Quest 7 has always been a bit of a controversial one for me and a lot of other RPG fans. It’s an amazing game, but honestly, it’s long. Like, really long. You spend so much time traveling between islands, and that’s what divides people – some love it, others find it drags on.

Both the original PlayStation version and the 3DS remake of Dragon Quest 7 often feel unnecessarily drawn out, with players frequently retracing their steps, which disrupts the story’s flow. It’s famously a slow-paced RPG, and that’s precisely what makes a reimagining so promising.

Based on the PS5 demo, Square Enix and HexaDrive seem to be creating something truly special with this remake. It’s a much smoother and more focused take on a classic Dragon Quest adventure, fixing the problems that previously held it back.

For example, the beginning of the original game was very slow-paced. In Reimagined, we’ve significantly sped things up by removing unnecessary parts and streamlining the experience. Conversations are now more concise, and some of the most boring quests have been removed.

Simply put, you can now jump into your first fight much faster, without having to sit through hours of conversations with non-player characters. The goal is for this updated version to keep making things more efficient as the story progresses.

Some people argue that this new version of the game removes content and isn’t as good as older ones. However, it’s important to remember how repetitive and frustrating the original Dragon Quest 7 could be. We think that context is key here, and it’s easy to forget just how much time the original game could waste.

Honestly, as a fan, I’m totally okay with them updating the story for today’s viewers, as long as they don’t change who the characters are at their core, or mess with the moments that really define the whole feel of the adventure. Those things are sacred!

The remake also includes helpful improvements to make the game more enjoyable. For example, it now shows you where to go next on the map, so you don’t have to ask every character. Plus, you can speed up battles to make repetitive sections go by faster.

When it comes to challenging gameplay, we really like the new difficulty options in Reimagined. You can choose from easy, normal, and hard, or create your own custom experience by adjusting things like how much damage you deal and receive.

I always thought Dragon Quest 7 was more about the story and characters than super tough battles – once you figured out how the different jobs worked, it wasn’t that hard. But man, could it be a slog sometimes! Luckily, this remake lets you increase how much experience, money, and job experience you earn, which makes everything way more enjoyable. It’s a fantastic change!

Alternatively, you could choose to make things harder on yourself – but that’s the fun of having choices!

Dragon Quest VII was definitely in need of an update, and it looks like the ‘Reimagined’ version is providing exactly that.

Honestly, the art style is just amazing. It totally reimagines the whole RPG as if it’s a diorama, with characters that look like puppets. Okay, maybe Kiefer’s face being used for the character isn’t for everyone – it’s a bit like something out of Team America – but you can’t deny this remake has a really unique and surprisingly cozy vibe. It just looks good!

We’re really excited to continue playing Dragon Quest 7 Reimagined and see if the rest of the game lives up to its promising start. It has the potential to be one of the most impressive Dragon Quest remakes so far.
