Warning: This article contains spoilers for Happy Gilmore 2.
One modern woman’s character has been laid to rest.
In the highly anticipated follow-up to Adam Sandler’s 1996 golf comedy “Happy Gilmore,” featuring a star-studded cast, one of the film’s cherished characters met an unexpected and swift end, leaving many fans in shock.
The movie that debuted on Netflix on July 25 begins by depicting the life changes of the main character, who was once a hockey player turned golfer, following his victories in the first film and saving his grandmother’s home. Through narration, Happy (Adam) explains how he and Virginia Venit (Julie Bowen) deepened their love, got married, and expanded their family with four sons and a daughter, who is portrayed by Adam’s real-life daughter Sunny Sandler.
However, the unusual golf instructor reviewed his victories, and during this time, the film depicts Happy accidentally hitting a ball that hits Virginia on the head, resulting in Julie’s character’s demise. This tragic event left Happy as a solitary father to five children, leading him to retire from professional golf.
Though my beloved character met an untimely end just four minutes into the film, Julie managed to pop up at various points throughout the movie – even making a surprise visit to Happy’s sanctuary, where she playfully prodded him to find forgiveness for her passing.
Alongside Adam, Julie, and Christopher McDonald (returning as Shooter McGavin), other stars graced the screen. Their lineup rivals that of the star-studded guests you’d find at both the Grammy Awards and the Super Bowl.
In the present day, individuals such as Travis Kelce, Bad Bunny, and Post Malone share the spotlight with comedic performances by golf greats like John Daly, Rory McIlroy, and Scottie Scheffler.
In the second installment of “Happy Gilmore,” several new characters were introduced, but the filmmakers ensured to pay tribute to the late Carl Weathers, who portrayed Happy’s mentor Chubbs in the first movie. Unfortunately, Carl passed away in 2024 due to heart disease.
In an exclusive chat with TopMob News, Adam shared a heartfelt sentiment: “It’s truly disheartening that Carl Weathers was drafted into reality, as we had penned an entire tale for him and his son. Sadly, Carl passed away before seeing it come to life.
He added, “So, we show the love to Carl in the movie.”
In fact, the actor from Rocky was found mentioned in Happy Chubbs’ golf guidebook, and he also shared memories about the guidance he received from the coach in the initial film, which significantly aided the golfer in regaining his golf stroke.
In the original film, the late Bob Barker, who had a physical altercation with Happy, was symbolically represented in a video game where he reenacted the fight. Additionally, the late Richard “Gentle Giant” Kiel was memorialized as his game character’s son observed and paid tribute to his father’s affection for Happy.
As Adam told TopMob, “Everybody from the first one we try to give love to.”
While Happy Gilmore 2 is out now on Netflix, read on to see what other movies are releasing soon.
