When we spoke, Johnny Flynn admitted he was anxious about his family seeing his new film, Goodbye June. In it, the 42-year-old gives a moving and subtle performance as Connor, the youngest brother struggling to deal with his mother’s serious illness.

According to Flynn, this person is completely genuine and doesn’t hide his feelings, especially when it comes to his mother, who is his biggest influence. His sisters, however, are focused on their own children and families. This makes Flynn particularly anxious about the premiere, as his own mother will be attending—something he feels is a significant moment for people of her generation.

For actor Flynn, this project is a departure from his previous work. He’s well-known for playing Ian Fleming in ‘Operation Mincemeat’ and Mr. Knightley in the 2020 film ‘Emma’. He’s also a successful musician, having released six albums.

As he began to fully embody the character, he naturally found himself recalling the experience of his own father’s death when he was 18. He described how it vividly brought back memories of hospital waiting rooms and the quiet sadness that surrounds a loss. He also connected with the character’s struggles with self-doubt, admitting he, like many actors, sometimes feels like a fraud.

Working with such acclaimed actors like Kate Winslet, Helen Mirren, Andrea Riseborough, Timothy Spall, and Toni Collette actually intensified his feelings of self-doubt. He admits with a wry smile that they were all among his favorite actors. But he decided to embrace the opportunity, telling himself that if he didn’t succeed, at least he’d had the chance to work with them – and that might be his only chance.
