Harlan Coben Addresses Lazarus Season 2’s Chances

Throughout 2025, the platform captivated audiences with a diverse range of shows, including the teen dramas The Summer I Turned Pretty and We Were Liars, the action-packed Butterfly and Countdown, and the intense war series The Terminal List: Dark Wolf. More recently, its new horror thriller has quietly become a popular success.

Harlan Coben, the author behind many popular books, recently released Lazarus on Prime Video. While Coben has been working with Netflix to adapt his novels for several years, Lazarus marks his first original series not based on one of his books. Coben recently told US Weekly what would need to happen for a second season of Lazarus to be made.

The author revealed they’ve never created a second season, despite previous offers. They explained the ending wasn’t meant as a traditional cliffhanger, but rather as a way to hint at potential future stories and leave the audience wondering what might happen next.

The popular author clarified that he would only return for a second season of the show if he felt it could surpass the first. He explained that the first season fully resolves all the initial questions and provides a complete story. When asked about a potential Season 2, he admitted he wasn’t sure if one would happen.

Sam Claflin, the lead actor in the series, described the season’s ending as a complete surprise and a game-changer. He was particularly impressed with the final episode, admitting he hadn’t predicted the turn of events and initially believed Joel was responsible for everything that happened.

The actor said a second season is possible, but it depends on audience demand. It’s not a decision they can make themselves. They feel the show ended in a way that allows for continuation if viewers want it.

Lazarus Became a Sleeper Hit on Prime Video

The six-episode series Lazarus premiered on October 22nd, but it wasn’t well-received. Critics gave it a low score of 42% on Rotten Tomatoes, and there aren’t enough audience reviews yet to calculate a viewer score.

Despite a quiet start, it unexpectedly became very popular. After three days, it reached third place, following closely behind the show Gen V in second and the documentary series Allen Iv3rson in first.

The new series Lazarus features Sam Claflin, known for his role in Peaky Blinders, as Joel, a forensic psychologist. He begins investigating unsolved murders after his father’s unexpected death causes him to see ghosts. The show also stars Bill Nighy as Joel’s father, Dr. L, alongside Alexandra Roach and David Fynn.

Lazarus is streaming on Prime Video.
