Harrison Ford is widely considered one of the best actors working today. He’s starred in some of the most popular movie series of all time and truly embodies the classic movie star. While many aspiring actors likely seek his guidance, he doesn’t seem to enjoy giving or receiving advice.
In a recent appearance on NPR, Ford was asked about the best piece of advice he ever ignored, because sometimes advice is just terrible. The actor implied that he always ignored whatever advice he had been given. He indicated he hadn’t necessarily been given much, probably because he says he probably looked like somebody who wouldn’t listen to it.
Ford shared that people occasionally ask him for advice, but he doesn’t tell them to follow his own path. Instead, he encourages them to do things differently than he did.
My advice is simple: don’t copy what others do to achieve their goals. Don’t try to replicate their success. Instead, discover your own unique path and create your own way forward.
It’s unlikely people seek advice from Harrison Ford expecting this kind of response. Usually, people ask for guidance to understand what strategies have succeeded or failed for someone who’s already accomplished their goal. While this isn’t a typical answer, it’s actually pretty solid advice. Just imitating someone else’s past actions isn’t always as effective as it seems.
It’s worth noting that Harrison Ford seems to genuinely support this idea. When Alden Ehrenreich played a younger Han Solo in Solo: A Star Wars Story, Ford apparently encouraged him to create his own unique interpretation of the character.
As a movie fanatic, I always get a kick out of looking at how stars are made. But you know, just copying what someone else did – like trying to become the next Harrison Ford – isn’t a recipe for success. He hit it big in the ’70s, and honestly, the industry is a totally different beast now. What worked for him back then? It probably wouldn’t fly for anyone trying to make it in 2025.

It’s definitely valuable to forge your own path. Many successful people have achieved their goals in unique ways, and being different likely played a role. If everyone followed the same methods, it would be hard to stand out from the crowd.
Harrison Ford generally seems trustworthy, so I’m inclined to listen to him, even though his main point is to be wary of taking advice from anyone.
