With plans for a new movie in the works, the popular detective Harry Hole will also be featured in a brand new book soon.
Harry Hole, the compelling detective created by Norwegian author Jo Nesbø, has starred in thirteen novels, starting with The Bat (originally Flaggermusmannen in 1996). Like many famous literary detectives, Hole is a brilliant but often difficult investigator who uses unconventional methods. The series, most recently continuing with Killing Moon (Blodmüne) in 2023, also explores his personal battles with alcoholism and depression, and his journey toward better mental health and professional conduct.
To celebrate the launch of the new Netflix series, Grant Hermanns from ScreenRant spoke with Jo Nesbø about his Harry Hole detective novels. Nesbø revealed heâs been writing a fourteenth book in the series during the making of the Netflix show, and itâs expected to be released in Fall 2026. He also shared a hint about the plot: the story is set against the backdrop of a film production, which he jokingly noted was fitting given the timing.
Jo Nesbø has announced a new Harry Hole novel, which is great news as Netflix is currently developing a second TV adaptation of the series. The character previously appeared in the 2017 film Snowman, starring Michael Fassbender, based on the 2007 novel. Unfortunately, the film wasnât well-received by critics or audiences, so plans for a movie franchise were cancelled, and the director has since distanced himself from the project.
The upcoming Netflix series, Jo Nesbø’s Detective Hole, will be different from the 2017 film. Like Michael Connellyâs Bosch series, it will draw from multiple novels to create its storyline. The show primarily adapts the fifth book in the series, Marekors (known as The Devil’s Star in English), and follows Detective Hole â played by Tobias Santelmann â as he investigates a serial killer in Oslo. The killer leaves small diamonds shaped like a pentagram at each crime scene.
The new book will also include familiar elements from the authorâs earlier novels, Rødstrupe (known as The Redbreast in English) and Sorgenfri (translated as Nemesis). All three stories center around detective Harry Hole as he battles his longtime nemesis, the corrupt police officer Tom Waaler, who is portrayed by Joel Kinnaman in the Netflix series.
Itâs a logical choice to place the next Harry Hole novel within a movie set. Jo Nesbø is currently involved in a film production himself â the Netflix series â and the previous book, Killing Moon, already had Harry Hole living in Los Angeles, a major center for film and television. The intriguing question is whether Nesbø will give Hole a case that takes place outside of Norway. Most of the books, especially since the early ones, have been set within the country, often in Oslo.
The announcement of a new Harry Hole book coming this fall is a good sign for the future of the Netflix series. With Jo Nesbø continuing to write new stories for the famous detective, the show will have fresh material to adapt, similar to how Michael Connelly extended his Bosch series with new books.
Jo Nesbø’s Detective Hole is now streaming on Netflix.
