The upcoming HBO Max series rebooting the Harry Potter books is creating a lot of excitement, and the studio is bringing together a top-notch team to make it happen. The show will be led by Francesca Gardiner and Mark Mylod, who are known for their work on Succession, and they’ve already cast Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape. However, they’re still searching for the actor to play Lord Voldemort. Finding someone who can capture the same chilling presence as Ralph Fiennes did in the movies is a crucial challenge for the series.
Interestingly, the larger franchise may have already cast its villain. Matthew Macfadyen recently provided the voice for Lord Voldemort in the Audible audio drama of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, released November 4th. Even though Voldemort has a small role in the first book, Macfadyen skillfully portrays the character’s chilling and controlled threat through his voice. Given his previous work, he seems like a great fit to explore the full depth and complexity of the character as the series progresses.
Why Matthew Macfadyen Would Be the Perfect Voldemort
Macfadyen’s experience and versatility make him a strong contender to take over the role previously held by Fiennes. His recent performance in an Audible production demonstrates his ability to portray convincingly menacing characters. Plus, his work on HBO’s Succession, as well as roles like Mr. Paradox in Deadpool & Wolverine and John Stonehouse, proves he can handle the dramatic and over-the-top aspects of a villain like Voldemort. Specifically, his Emmy-winning performance in Succession showed he can play characters who are both pitiful and frightening, even with a touch of humor. The fact that the directors Gardiner and Mylod have collaborated with Macfadyen before suggests a successful working relationship could continue.
Audible’s full cast recordings of the Harry Potter series boast an impressive lineup of actors, including Hugh Laurie as Albus Dumbledore, Riz Ahmed as Severus Snape, and Michelle Gomez as Minerva McGonagall. The release of The Philosopher’s Stone has reassured fans that these characters can be successfully reimagined, especially with concerns about the upcoming TV series. Even with limited screen time, Macfadyen delivers a fantastic new take on Voldemort’s voice – it respects previous portrayals while still feeling fresh and unique.
Besides Cillian Murphy and Tilda Swinton – who some fans suggest could play a female version of the character – many are hoping Richard Macfadyen will be cast as Voldemort for the HBO series. He’s already demonstrated a strong understanding of the role in the Audible audiobook, and HBO should consider that the ideal Voldemort may already be within reach.
