The Harry Potter universe is currently experiencing a lot of different adaptations. HBO is creating a complete remake of the series, and we’re seeing regular updates from the set. This new series, which is currently in production for its first season, is diverging from the original books and adding new elements not seen in the films. Adding to the complexity, a fully-cast audio book version of the series is also being released, creating even more versions of the story.
The Wizarding World, Audible, and J.K. Rowling’s Pottermore Publishing have announced more actors joining the cast of the Harry Potter: The Full-Cast Audio Editions. Notably, Bill Nighy – known for his roles in Shaun of the Dead and Pirates of the Caribbean – will be participating. Nighy previously played Rufus Scrimgeour in the Harry Potter films, and now he’s taking on a different character in the audiobooks.
Harry Potter Series Recasts a Movie Favorite in a New Role

Today’s announcement revealed that Nighy will be playing Professor Slughorn, a significant character from later in the book series. Slughorn is known for being the Hogwarts professor who first told Tom Riddle, later Voldemort, about horcruxes and how to create them. After Voldemort’s return, Slughorn went into hiding but eventually returned to Hogwarts to teach Potions, a position previously held by Severus Snape. This change meant Snape then became the rotating instructor for Defense Against the Dark Arts.
Bill Nighy expressed his excitement about playing the professor, especially since he’d previously portrayed a Minister for Magic. He joked about whether he’s the only actor to have played both roles. Nighy feels it’s rewarding to continue working on projects that will entertain audiences for years to come, and he particularly enjoys playing intellectual characters, as he didn’t have the opportunity to pursue higher education himself. Ultimately, he hopes this role will provide enjoyable entertainment for children, whether they’re on long car trips or commuting to school.
Bill Nighy is the first actor from the original Harry Potter films to reprise his role for the new audiobooks, though other film actors are involved in the upcoming HBO TV series. Warwick Davis, for example, will return as Professor Flitwick in the series.
The audiobooks of Harry Potter feature a fantastic cast of well-known actors. Highlights include Hugh Laurie as Albus Dumbledore, Matthew Macfadyen as Lord Voldemort, Riz Ahmed as Professor Snape, Michelle Gomez as Professor McGonagall, Mark Addy as Hagrid, Kit Harington as Professor Lockhart, Keira Knightley as Professor Umbridge, Simon Pegg as Arthur Weasley, and James McAvoy as Mad-Eye Moody.
The full-cast audio editions of the Harry Potter books are coming soon! The first book, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, will be released on November 4th, and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets will follow on December 16th. The rest of the series will be available in 2026.
