Harry Potter Reboot Casts Another Character Missing From The Movies (& Fixes A Major Problem)

The new Harry Potter series coming to HBO is already generating buzz due to changes from the original movies. Reports suggest Voldemort might appear earlier than expected, the character Nicolas Flamel will definitely be included, and some previously cut scenes have been leaked. The series is also expected to bring back characters like Peeves, and despite objections from original director Chris Columbus, it will justify its new direction through creative choices.

The newest casting announcement confirms Jake Curran will play Ronan, a centaur who wasn’t included in the first *Harry Potter* film, *The Sorcerer’s Stone*. In the books, Ronan was a friend to both Firenze and Bane, and first encountered Hagrid while investigating a unicorn’s death. His role was completely cut from the movie, with only Firenze appearing. If this report is accurate, it’s a welcome change, as Ronan is a surprisingly important character, and Curran’s casting suggests the remake might be addressing a significant flaw in the original film.

Ronan Is A Big Casting Move For Harry Potter Season 1 For 2 Reasons

Though Ronan doesn’t have a large role throughout the series, he’s crucial in three important moments. He protects Harry, Ron, and Hermione from Bane when they meet Grawp, considering their youth. He also originally led the centaurs into the Battle of Hogwarts (a scene that was ultimately cut). Additionally, he foreshadows the coming war in a subtle book scene, repeatedly stating that “Mars is bright.” This seemingly simple statement – Mars being a symbol of war – offers a dark prediction about Harry and Hogwarts’ future, and it also explains how Firenze later becomes the Divination teacher.

Perhaps even more significantly, casting a real actor as Ronan hints that we might avoid the terrible CGI that ruined the centaur scene in the first movie. When Harry is saved by Firenze, looking closely at the creature reveals how poorly it was made. The effects were so bad, in fact, that the scene is filmed in near-darkness – which, unfortunately, probably worked to its advantage.

The casting of Curran, who looks like the original depiction of Ronan – except, thankfully, without the horse features – suggests the new series will feature well-designed centaurs. Hopefully, the reboot will also update the visual effects, improving on some of the noticeably outdated CGI from the original.
