A key casting decision for the new Harry Potter series on HBO Max is who will play Lord Voldemort. While Voldemort doesn’t appear until the fourth book, meaning it’s still about five years off, fans are already discussing potential actors, especially with recent announcements about the main trio and Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape. Despite no official word, rumors suggest the role of the Dark Lord, He Who Shall Not Be Named, has actually been filled.
In a video shared on Instagram (reported by The Direct), Ralph Fiennes discussed who could play Lord Voldemort in the upcoming HBO Max reboot. He mentioned he believes Cillian Murphy would be a very strong choice, and indicated that the role has already been cast. He wasn’t certain, but thought a decision had already been made.
Ralph Fiennes is currently promoting his new film, 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, which concluded with Cillian Murphy reprising his role, hinting at future installments. This news comes after Murphy stated he was unaware of being cast in the next film. He jokingly said, “I don’t know anything about that,” and added, “It’s hard to keep up with Ralph Fiennes. He’s an incredible actor, so whoever takes on that role has a tough job ahead of them.”
Could Cillian Murphy Play Lord Voldemort in Harry Potter on HBO Max?

Although Cillian Murphy has said he’s not playing Lord Voldemort, it’s common for actors to be secretive. They often have non-disclosure agreements and aren’t allowed to confirm roles in big movies until the studio gives them permission. However, someone like Ralph Fiennes, who isn’t involved in the film, wouldn’t be bound by those rules and could share information if he had it.
Despite his comments, Fiennes didn’t confirm anything definitively, leaving room for doubt about what actually happened. If the rumors are true, Cillian Murphy would be a strong choice for Lord Voldemort. He’s proven he can handle big roles in films like Christopher Nolan’s Batman series, where he played the Scarecrow. While it’s been a while, he also starred in 28 Days Later, and recently returned to that universe in Bone Temple. However, it’s important to remember that nothing is official until HBO makes an announcement.
