The new Harry Potter TV series is already introducing Lord Voldemort and seems to be exploring his backstory much sooner than the films did. In the movies, Voldemort didn’t fully appear until *The Goblet of Fire*, though a brief glimpse of him was shown on the back of Professor Quirrell’s head at the end of *The Philosopher’s Stone*. Rumors have circulated for some time that the show would feature Voldemort earlier, specifically in Season 1, and it looks like those rumors are proving true.
HBO is currently filming in the English village of Lustleigh. Earlier photos from the set suggested it was recreating Godric’s Hollow from the Harry Potter series, and recent images shared online confirm this. The new photos show people dressed for Halloween, strongly indicating the scene depicts the night James and Lily Potter were killed by Lord Voldemort.

Knowing they’re shooting scenes like this, I’m bracing myself for a deep dive into Voldemort’s past. We’re almost guaranteed to see flashbacks of the night he went after the Potters – the whole tragic story of him killing Harry’s parents, and then his curse backfiring. I’m expecting they’ll also show Hagrid arriving to rescue baby Harry, too. It’s going to be intense!
Including Voldemort Killing James & Lily Makes Sense For Harry Potter’s TV Show

Even though a new Harry Potter series will likely differ from the books and films, it would be a good idea to show Lord Voldemort killing James and Lily Potter. In fact, *because* the show is aiming for a fresh take, including this pivotal scene makes sense. The series needs to establish its own identity while still respecting the original story, and offering a different experience than the movies, and this addition would help achieve that.
I truly believe starting the series with Voldemort’s attack is brilliant. To me, that’s really where Harry’s story *starts*, so it feels like the most natural beginning for the show. It immediately explains everything that happened, but still leaves room to reveal important details later – like the power of Lily’s sacrifice and the prophecy. Most importantly, it perfectly shows the deep connection between Harry and Voldemort. It’s the defining moment of the whole story, and honestly, I can’t imagine a better way to kick things off.
As a film buff, I think starting the remake with a really intense, almost shocking scene – a ‘cold open’ like the White Walkers in the first episode of *Game of Thrones* – would be brilliant. It would instantly establish the high stakes and introduce the main villain right away. Then, we could cut to Vernon Dursley’s normal day, but with hints that the wizarding world is openly celebrating around him, even amongst Muggles. This contrast would really emphasize the emotional weight of the story and give the remake a unique feel, helping it stand out from the existing films.
With the possibility of Voldemort’s attack on the Potters happening this season, casting the role is a big question. While popular choices like Cillian Murphy and Matt Smith seem unavailable, rumors suggest HBO is considering both men and women for the part. No official announcement has been made, but if Voldemort will appear in the first season, casting will likely need to happen soon.
As a huge cinema fan, I’m thrilled to share that they’re currently filming the first season of a new Harry Potter series! It’s set to premiere on HBO and HBO Max around 2027, and I’m already counting down the days.
