The first *Harry Potter* movie, *Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone*, came out in 2001 and launched a hugely popular film series that continued for ten years. As 2026 approaches, the film is about to reach a major anniversary. Movie studios often use nostalgia to promote their films, celebrating big milestones for popular titles—like the recent 50th anniversary events for *Jaws*. Warner Bros. is expected to have significant plans to celebrate *Harry Potter* next year when *Sorcerer’s Stone* turns 25. However, it raises the question of whether all this focus on the past might overshadow the franchise’s upcoming new projects.
As reported by *Variety*, Warner Bros. is planning a year-long celebration of the 25th anniversary of the *Sorcerer’s Stone* movie. A key part of the celebration will be bringing the film back to theaters, though a specific release date hasn’t been announced yet. According to WB, this anniversary is a chance to honor the film’s lasting impact and share its magic with a new audience.
Will the Movie Re-Release Hurt HBO’s Harry Potter TV Show?

Warner Bros.’ decision to celebrate *Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone* all year round is noteworthy. It’s understandable to honor such a significant film, as the *Harry Potter* movies remain incredibly popular even now, long after the series ended. However, the first season of the new *Harry Potter* series on HBO Max is currently being made and is expected to premiere in 2027, shortly after the 25th-anniversary celebrations for the film conclude. Depending on when *Sorcerer’s Stone* is shown in theaters, the re-release and the show’s debut might be very close together.
Given how much Warner Bros. has put into HBO Max, it’s a bit surprising to see the 25th anniversary of *Sorcerer’s Stone* become many young people’s first experience with Harry Potter. People are currently questioning the purpose of the new TV series and who it’s meant for. While the show *could* attract a new generation of fans to the Wizarding World, heavily promoting the movie anniversary might make it harder for the series to succeed.
As a huge *Harry Potter* fan, I’ve been hearing a lot of people say the new TV show looks *too* much like the movies, and honestly, I get it. Even the director of the first film, Christopher Columbus, has pointed out the costumes are almost identical! I’ve seen set photos of the Hogwarts Express that could easily be stills from the movies. It feels a little strange to be reminded so strongly of the films right before the show comes out. It’s just setting us up to constantly compare the two, and a few extra scenes with characters like Vernon Dursley probably won’t be enough to make people feel like the series is doing something new and worthwhile. I even worry that if a new generation discovers the story through the first movie, they might wonder why they need a TV show on top of that.
One of the biggest appeals of the new HBO Max series is its potential to be a more accurate adaptation of the original *Harry Potter* books. The TV format allows for a deeper dive into the stories and characters. However, while the *Harry Potter* films weren’t perfect copies of the books, they’re still widely loved. They stayed relatively true to the source material, unlike some adaptations – for example, the movie *The Running Man* took significant liberties with Stephen King’s novel, making the new adaptation by Edgar Wright interesting. The *Harry Potter* movies weren’t exact replicas of the books, but they were faithful enough to create a satisfying experience for fans. Whether the TV show can achieve the same balance remains to be seen.
