Harry Potter Season 2 Gets a Positive Update as Delayed Release Confirmed

After a bit of discouraging news last week, there’s some positive updates about the upcoming Harry Potter series on HBO Max. A new trailer has been released, and surprisingly, the first season is scheduled to premiere this Christmas! This is a strong start for the show, which is planned to span seven to ten seasons, adapting all seven books in the series. However, HBO’s Casey Bloys clarified that the show won’t be released yearly, which is concerning given that the main actors are children and will be growing up during production.

In a recent interview with The Times, HBO’s Bloys explained they’re aiming to avoid long waits between seasons, especially since the young actors are growing up quickly. He clarified that the show won’t return every year, given its large scale, but confirmed that season two is currently being written. While this news should ease some worries, the production timeline for the Harry Potter series remains a concern for a number of reasons.

Harry Potter Can’t Delay Too Much Or the Kids Will Grow Out of the Roles

The first Harry Potter movie came out in 2001, and the last one in 2011. This means the young actors aged ten years over the course of what felt like seven school years at Hogwarts – a reasonable pace for a movie series. However, if the new HBO Max series lasts the initially planned ten seasons and isn’t released every year, the actors could be in their mid-20s by the time it finishes. That could create a significant issue with the show’s continuity.

Casey Bloys explained this isn’t unique to Harry Potter; HBO Max’s expensive streaming series generally can’t be produced every year. While a show like The Pitt, filmed on location without many special effects, might return annually, large-scale productions such as Harry Potter, House of the Dragon, and The Last of Us require so much work that yearly seasons aren’t feasible. This creates a potential issue as the young actors playing these roles age and eventually outgrow them.

According to Bloys, the second season is currently being written, though this isn’t a recent update. He mentioned last November that writing had already begun before the first season even finished filming. That means the script has been in development for at least five months, and there’s still filming and post-production to be done. Bloys stated they’re aiming to avoid long delays, but the actors’ ages will factor into the schedule.
