The first trailer for the new Harry Potter TV series is out, and it reveals the show will premiere sooner than originally planned.
The new TV show will premiere this Christmas, much sooner than the previously announced release date of early 2027.
The first trailer offers a glimpse into Harry’s early life, starting with his unhappy home with the Dursleys, his introduction to the half-giant Hagrid (played by Nick Frost), and his journey to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
The story also suggests there are new aspects of Harry’s past to be revealed, even showing him attending a non-magical school.

New imagery of the cast has also been unveiled.
HBO revealed plans for a new series in 2023, and last year they announced the cast and shared the first photos of the actors in their costumes, including Dominic McLaughlin as Harry.
The show received a confirmed early 2027 release date at the beginning of the year, and a first photo of McLaughlin filming was released earlier this week.
A new photo posted on the official Harry Potter social media shows Harry Potter wearing red robes and walking with his broomstick towards the Quidditch pitch at Hogwarts.

He looked up to see Gryffindor and Hufflepuff banners waving, alongside a poster featuring Fred and George Weasley. Light snow was falling on the Hogwarts grounds.
McLaughlin appeared in the Sky Original comedy series, Grow. Stanton is an accomplished performer, having previously played roles in the West End productions of Matilda and Starlight Express, composed by Andrew Lloyd Webber.

This new Harry Potter series marks the acting debut for Stout, who has previously only appeared in television commercials.
JK Rowling, the author of the Harry Potter series, has received criticism for her opinions on transgender rights. In 2020, she published a detailed essay explaining her views on sex and gender, but LGBTQ+ organizations like Stonewall disagreed with and challenged her statements.
J.K. Rowling has expressed her opinions on social media, most recently in a 2024 post on X (formerly Twitter). In that post, she stated that she doesn’t believe in the concept of transgender children and argued against the idea that someone’s gender identity differs from the sex they were assigned at birth.
In May 2025, J.K. Rowling established the JK Rowling Women’s Fund to provide financial support for legal battles aimed at protecting women’s rights based on biological sex.
The main actors from the Harry Potter films – Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, and Emma Watson – have spoken out against J.K. Rowling’s views and expressed support for the transgender community. However, other cast members like Ralph Fiennes, Helena Bonham Carter, and Jim Broadbent have come to Rowling’s defense amidst the criticism she’s faced.
The Harry Potter TV series will premiere this Christmas on HBO Max.
