Harry Potter TV series spin-offs are not planned at HBO, confirms network CEO

As a huge movie fan, I’m really excited to hear HBO is tackling a new Harry Potter series! But apparently, they’re sticking strictly to the original seven books – no venturing off into other corners of the Wizarding World like they’ve done with ‘Fantastic Beasts’. It seems they’re focused on a faithful adaptation of the core story, which honestly, I’m totally on board with.

It’s been 16 years since the Harry Potter films with Daniel Radcliffe finished, and a new adaptation of J.K. Rowling’s books is now confirmed to be released around Christmas 2026.

Although the earlier Harry Potter films led to the ‘Fantastic Beasts’ trilogy, Casey Bloys, head of HBO and Max Content, has stated that this new TV series isn’t meant to start a larger, connected Harry Potter universe for television and film.

The real creative potential lies in fully immersing yourself in a book, rather than being limited by a movie’s fixed two-hour length.

Bloys expressed his excitement about the Harry Potter series, explaining that the show aims to be ‘more than just an adaptation’ of the books – it will both follow the original stories and add new content.

He mentioned the show will include some elements not directly featured in either the movies or the books, but these additions won’t contradict established lore – they’re simply things you haven’t seen before.

I’m so excited about the new Harry Potter series! They’ve cast Dominic McLaughlin as Harry, which is fantastic, and Alastair Stout and Arabella Stanton will be playing Ron and Hermione. The adult cast is looking incredible too – John Lithgow as Dumbledore is a brilliant choice, and I can’t wait to see Paapa Essiedu as Snape. Plus, Janet McTeer as McGonagall and Nick Frost as Hagrid? Seriously, this cast is shaping up to be amazing!

As a big movie fan, I’ve been following the controversy around J.K. Rowling, the author of the Harry Potter books. She’s received a lot of criticism lately because of her opinions on transgender rights. Back in 2020, she published a long piece explaining where she stands on the discussions around sex and gender, but it really sparked debate and organizations like Stonewall, which support LGBTQ+ rights, strongly disagreed with her views.

J.K. Rowling has expressed her opinions on social media, most recently in a 2024 post on X (formerly Twitter). In that post, she stated that she does not believe in the concept of transgender children and argued against the idea that someone’s gender identity differs from the sex they were assigned at birth.

In May 2025, J.K. Rowling created the JK Rowling Women’s Fund to provide financial support for legal battles aimed at protecting women’s rights as defined by biological sex.

The main actors from the Harry Potter films – Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, and Emma Watson – have spoken out against J.K. Rowling’s views and voiced their support for the transgender community. However, other cast members like Ralph Fiennes, Helena Bonham Carter, and Jim Broadbent have come to Rowling’s defense amid the criticism she’s faced.

I’m so excited! HBO Max is finally coming to the UK and Ireland on March 26th! You can find all the details at hbomax.com. And get this – they’re adding Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone to the platform sometime around Christmas 2026! I can’t wait!
