Nick Frost says he didn’t just try out for the part of Hagrid in the new Harry Potter series on HBO – he actually visualized it into existence. The popular comedic actor, famous for movies like Hot Fuzz, will be playing the kind half-giant, a role previously and memorably played by the late Robbie Coltrane.
Nick Frost reveals how he manifested Hagrid role for Harry Potter series
Nick Frost’s journey to playing Rubeus Hagrid wasn’t through a typical audition. It actually started with a Christmas tradition and a suggestion from his partner that he try to ‘manifest’ landing the role.
As a dedicated Harry Potter fan, I can tell you I’ve seen every single film – and I don’t just say that! My family and I make it a Christmas tradition, starting on December 20th and watching them all the way through until about a week and a half later. It’s a bit of a ritual for us. Interestingly, before I landed the role of Hagrid, my partner suggested a little manifesting exercise. So last Christmas, I went all in – I watched all the Harry Potter films back-to-back on Sky, and while doing so, I hand-wrote the name ‘Hagrid’ a whopping 7,000 times! You could say I was really hoping for the part.
The unique casting process seemed to work! Actor Frost has been chosen to play the beloved Keeper of Keys and Grounds. He’s excited to take on the role made famous by Robbie Coltrane, and feels a lot of respect for the late actor’s incredible performance. However, Frost also intends to put his own spin on the character, taking advantage of the show’s expanded format – each book will be a full season, allowing for more depth and detail.
Frost told Collider he wasn’t aiming for something radically different with his work, emphasizing the importance of respecting the source material. However, he believed there was room to add small, detailed nuances. He described his interpretation of Hagrid as a kind, childlike character – both gentle and unpredictable. He’s excited that working on a book each season allows him to fully explore these complexities and bring them to life.
HBO is making a new Harry Potter TV series, and it’s expected to premiere in 2027.
