HBO is heavily investing in a new *Harry Potter* TV series, planning to cover each of J.K. Rowling’s seven books in its own season. The show has cast Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger, and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley to play the central characters. As you’d expect with a project this big, early photos from the set have appeared online, including a first look at John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore. Excitingly, recent photos and videos also reveal a completely new scene for the Wizarding World – something that didn’t appear in either the original books or the Warner Bros. films.
Recent photos from the filming location reveal John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore meeting with the famous alchemist Nicolas Flamel. In the first *Harry Potter* book, *Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone*, Flamel is known as the creator of the Philosopher’s Stone, which can grant eternal life. Harry, Ron, and Hermione discover Flamel’s existence through a lot of research, eventually finding out about him and his connection to Dumbledore on a collectible wizard card. This explains why the three-headed dog was guarding something so important, though Flamel himself never makes an appearance in the book.

While the *Harry Potter* books establish a long-standing friendship between Dumbledore and Flamel, we never actually *see* them together. The new HBO series includes a scene showing their interaction, demonstrating the show’s willingness to add to the original story and visually depict events that were previously only mentioned in the books.

The original *Harry Potter* movies are still incredibly popular and influential, so it’s natural that the new series will be compared to them. This is made even more challenging by Warner Bros.’ plan to re-release the first movie in theaters in 2026, which will put the classic films and the new show in competition for viewers. Simply recreating the films or books would be unnecessary and unlikely to capture the same magic as the original cast. That’s why the new *Harry Potter* series is smart to focus on exploring parts of the wizarding world we haven’t seen before.
The show is attracting longtime fans by including scenes like the one between Dumbledore and Flamel – offering fresh content instead of just retelling the same story. The series format is perfect for this because, unlike movies with limited time, the show can explore the Wizarding World in much greater detail, expanding on elements the films had to quickly move past. This allows the adaptation to feel like a unique experience that complements, rather than replaces, the original movies.
The Harry Potter series is scheduled to premiere on HBO in 2027.
