Harry Styles’ family lights up his world like nobody else.
Following the conclusion of his Love On Tour in July 2023, the singer of “Aperture” took a two-year break, giving him time to focus on personal events, including becoming an uncle to his sister Gemma Styles’ daughter, who is two years old.
Harry, 32, recently told The Sunday Times that his sister had a baby, and he would have missed much of the early stages if not for his current situation. He shared this in an interview published on February 14th.
As a result, the One Direction alum felt a shift in his own priorities.
He explained that watching his niece grow up made everything clear to him. He knew immediately that being present in her life was what truly mattered.
The new addition to his life was a part of what led Harry to take a break from public life, something he originally thought was a crazy idea.
You know, I really felt like it was the perfect moment to step back. We’d just wrapped up a big tour in July, and with my 30th birthday looming in February, I realized I needed a pause. It was time to shift my focus and give some attention to the other things I wanted to experience in life. It’s so important to check in with yourself and make sure you’re living a well-rounded life, not just consumed by work!
The Grammy-winning artist spent a lot of his free time in Rome, and says the city helped him learn to relax and appreciate life at a slower pace.

He remembered being at a café, enjoying a coffee, and realizing how long it had been since he’d simply taken the time to do so. He said he’d been learning from his friends that eating—and really, just doing anything—isn’t just about getting the job done. He discovered the joy of being present and savoring the moment.
Harry also spent his break exploring his creative side. He recently explained that going to concerts sparked the ideas for his fourth studio album, Kiss All The Time. Disco, Occasionally, which will be released on March 6th.
You know, as a creator, it’s easy to get lost in the technical side of things. But what I really wanted with this project was to recapture that feeling of being in the audience – that magic that music creates. I shared with John Mayer recently that I wanted this music to feel like it was born on the dance floor, something truly immersive and special for everyone listening. It’s all about bringing that energy and emotion back to life.
While you wait for Harry’s new album, keep reading for more golden facts about the pop star…

Harry Styles was born on February 1, 1994, in Evesham, Worcestershire, to Anne Cox and Desmond Styles. He grew up with an older sister, Gemma, who was born in 1990.
The family settled in Holmes Chapel, Cheshire, when he was very young, and his mother, Anne, recalls his first word being “cat.”
I remember Styles describing his hometown – a small village of around 5,000 people – as a bit dull, honestly. But he always added that it was also really pretty and picturesque. It wasn’t exactly thrilling growing up there, but it was beautiful.

In his memoir, Dare to Dream, Harry remembered being unusually upset—he rarely cried—when his parents told him and his sister, Gemma, that they were getting divorced. He was seven years old at the time.
He admitted he hadn’t fully understood the situation at the time, but he was simply upset about his parents’ separation.
Des and Anne shared a home for two more years before Des moved out. Then, Anne relocated with Harry and Gemma to Northwich, a rural area in Cheshire. Later, when Harry was a teenager, the family returned to live in Holmes Chapel.
Anne and Robin Twist got married in 2013 after being a couple for more than ten years. Their son, Harry, proudly walked his mother down the aisle and served as best man at the wedding.

Everyone agreed Harry was a lively, imaginative child who loved being the center of attention – a natural performer, whether he was singing or playfully running around in public. He thrived in school plays, and the classic rock music he shared with his dad, like Elvis Presley, the Beatles, Pink Floyd, and Queen, influenced his musical preferences.
Louisa Jepson’s 2013 biography, Harry Styles—Every Piece of Me, reveals that Harry’s first recording was of Elvis Presley’s “The Girl of My Best Friend,” made on a karaoke machine his grandfather gave him. As he grew up, he also became a fan of bands like Coldplay and artists such as John Mayer and Noel Gallagher.
Harry started playing music in a band around age fourteen, originally hoping to play bass. However, another member already filled that role, so he became the singer instead. The band, called White Eskimo, won their school’s Battle of the Bands, earning a £100 prize and their first paid performance at a wedding.
Anne told Now magazine in 2010 that her son has always been confident and enjoyed making people laugh. She’d always predicted he’d become a performer.

Harry earned a little extra scratch—£6 an hour—working at W. Mandeville bakery on Saturdays.
Simon Wakefield, his former boss, told the Mirror in 2013 that he was the politest employee they’d ever had. Wakefield recalled that customers especially liked Styles when he briefly returned to the shop to film scenes for the movie One Direction: This Is Us.
I remember when Harry started working at the shop, it was amazing! Suddenly, we’d get swarms of girls coming in – sometimes a dozen at once! Even now, groups of around twenty will pop in and take pictures of the place, it’s wild. He was such a hard worker, too. He did everything – serving customers, keeping the back tidy, scrubbing the floors, washing all the trays, and always making sure the counter was spotless.

Anne was the one who ended up sending Harry’s X Factor application in when he got cold feet.
When auditioning for The X Factor in spring 2010, the 16-year-old – who’s often told he has a good voice, usually by his mum – performed an a cappella version of Stevie Wonder’s “Isn’t She Lovely.” He explained that singing is his passion, and if the people who could help him achieve his dream didn’t believe in him, it would be a significant obstacle to his plans.
Harry didn’t advance to the final or even the second-to-last round for the boys, but the show’s producers liked him enough to keep him involved.
It was a pivotal moment when Simon Cowell and guest judge Nicole Scherzinger – who was temporarily replacing Cheryl Cole – decided to put Harry together with other hopeful soloists: Liam Payne, Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, and Louis Tomlinson.
In the 2013 documentary One Direction: Going Our Way, Nicole Scherzinger jokingly admits to playing a key, though often unacknowledged, role in the band’s success. Meanwhile, judge Louis Walsh is remembered for famously failing to recognize Harry Styles’ potential.
It was Harry, however, who came up with the group’s name.
He remembered thinking the name sounded good when they were brainstorming. They tossed around a few ideas, and he honestly couldn’t recall exactly how it was chosen. He simply suggested it, everyone agreed, and it ended up sticking.
Zayn explained on Phoenix’s Hot 97.5 FM in 2012 that the band originally brainstormed a bunch of potential names. Harry suggested the name they ultimately chose – he simply texted it to the group, and they all agreed it worked. Apparently, Liam also had some ideas, though Zayn joked they weren’t very good. He remembered another suggestion was an acronym, USP, which stood for Unique Selling Point.

In October 2010, One Direction hit the X Factor stage live for the first time.
Anne, Harry’s mother, shared with Now magazine that she’s very proud of him, saying he’s behaving on the show just as genuinely and kindly as he does at home.
When Harry went to the X Factor house, I told him, ‘Just be yourself, Harry, and don’t become someone you’re not. Remember, you’ll still have chores to do when you get back home, like unloading the dishwasher.’
Despite being naturally suited for performing, Harry began experiencing panic attacks before each live show, according to Alice Montgomery’s biography, Harry. He once even vomited in the hallway beforehand. Eventually, he found that drinking sparkling water and practicing deep breathing helped calm his nerves.

Okay, so everyone thinks One Direction totally conquered the world after The X Factor, but let me tell you, they didn’t actually win! It breaks my heart a little to admit it, but they came third. Third! Matt Cardle won, and Rebecca Ferguson was runner-up. It still doesn’t diminish their greatness, obviously, but yeah, they didn’t take home the crown that year. I remember being SO upset!

Harry recalled enjoying friendships with both girls and boys when he was in primary school, according to biographer Louisa Jepson. He wasn’t like some boys who avoided girls, and he generally got along with everyone.
According to his White Eskimo bandmate, Will Sweeny, Harry Styles was surprisingly popular with girls even when he was very young. Sweeny told the Daily Star that Harry had several girlfriends starting around age 10, and always seemed to have a natural charm that attracted them. He described it as amusing and said Harry always had ‘a way with girls’.
Louis Tomlinson jokingly complained to The Sun about living with Harry, saying the biggest issue was the endless parade of women coming and going. He mentioned it was a constant stream! Of course, Louis was dating Eleanor Calder at the time, so he was probably teasing Harry a bit.
However, Jepson’s dad, Desmond, reassured him that when his son truly cared for someone, he was completely devoted to that one woman.
Harry has always prioritized safety, especially when it comes to intimacy. In a 2012 interview with OK! magazine, he shared that he was worried about accidentally getting his partner pregnant the first time they had sex, even though they had taken precautions. Thankfully, everything was okay. He believes it’s irresponsible to assume everything will be fine without proper protection.

Following One Direction’s win on The X Factor in 2011, Harry Styles publicly expressed interest in both 22-year-old Frankie Bridge from The Saturdays and Caroline Flack, who was 31 and hosted The Xtra Factor, the X Factor’s companion show.
He confessed to having a long-time crush on Frankie Bridge, starting when she was a member of S Club Juniors around age eight. He admitted to being a big fan, even having posters of her, and expressed a desire to kiss her. He also shared that both Frankie and Caroline Flack were his celebrity crushes, calling them both attractive. After the interview, he posted on The X Factor website, sending a message to Caroline Flack, telling her to say hello and calling her gorgeous.
Harry and Caroline first met in October 2011 at an after-party for a show at London’s W Hotel, and they left together. However, according to Alice Montgomery, nothing significant happened between them that evening.
In her 2015 memoir, Storm in a C Cup, Caroline Flack described how she and the other person initially connected well – they were both single and enjoyed each other’s company. She explained that problems only started when their relationship became public. At first, she said, everything was lighthearted, and he had even playfully mentioned being attracted to older women.
Despite claims that she and Harry Styles were just friends, fans of the band One Direction strongly asserted their interest in him. This led to Caroline Flack posting a tweet stating she was close friends with Harry and that he was a kind person, but she didn’t deserve the death threats she was receiving.
“Flack off, Caroline,” read a banner on display at a 1D concert.
The 14-year age difference between them continued to draw criticism from both the public and the media. Caroline Flack responded to the negativity in an interview with Now magazine, saying she didn’t understand why people found it so shocking. “If two people connect and are happy, why does it bother anyone else?” she asked, noting that people often focus on the negative aspects too quickly.
As One Direction began to achieve global fame, they subtly ended their romantic relationship in early 2012.

In 2012, Harry Styles and the rest of One Direction appeared on an episode of iCarly. The band was scheduled to perform as themselves, but Harry jokingly pretends to catch “jungle worms” after drinking from Carly’s water bottle—right after a doctor warns her she might still be sick and shouldn’t kiss anyone. Even after he’s supposedly recovered, Harry pretends to still be ill to get Carly to continue caring for him.
After a bit of a scare, Harry recovers, and One Direction is able to perform their hit song, “That’s What Makes You Beautiful.”
This funny moment has become a lasting internet memory, preserved on YouTube and in tweets like one from 2013. It revealed that Harry Styles turned down a kiss with Miranda Cosgrove in the original script for the One Direction episode of iCarly.

Back in 2012, after Taylor Swift and Harry Styles met at the Kids’ Choice Awards, Justin Bieber told the Daily Mirror that a very famous artist had already told him how attractive Harry was, but he wasn’t allowed to reveal who said it.
Harry told Seventeen magazine that summer that Taylor Swift was incredibly talented and a genuinely kind person. He said she was ‘honestly, the sweetest.’
Their romance wasn’t expected to last, but Taylor was at One Direction’s first concert at Madison Square Garden that December – a show where Harry was playfully showered with bras, underwear, and even an iPhone. For a brief, exciting period, they were the biggest pop couple around, from their public date in Central Park to a quick trip to Harry’s hometown and a disappointing Caribbean vacation that ultimately left Taylor feeling isolated.
Looking back at pictures from that date, Styles told Rolling Stone in 2017 that relationships are challenging no matter how old you are. He explained that being 18 and figuring things out just made it harder. He remembers feeling awkward, as you would on a date with someone you like—it should be straightforward, right? He considers it a valuable learning experience, ultimately saying he just wanted it to feel like a normal date.
Harry Styles, speaking about Taylor Swift’s songs widely believed to be inspired by their relationship – “Out of the Woods” and “Style” – shared that he feels fortunate if their experiences contributed to those songs. He explained that those deeply personal, difficult-to-express feelings are what truly resonate with listeners, and are the things he’s most private about. He emphasized that those songs are about the connection between two people, and he intends to keep the full story between them.
Asked if he had anything to tell Swift, he mused, “Certain things don’t work out. There’s a lot of things that can be right, and it’s still wrong. In writing songs about stuff like that, I like tipping a hat to the
time together.

Harry likes snowboarding.
In January 2014, a source told TopMob News that Harry and Kendall Jenner seemed to be enjoying each other’s company after they were seen together in Mammoth Lakes. Kendall later described Harry as a “cool” friend at the American Music Awards in November 2013.

Harry also likes swimming.
That marked the beginning of a complicated friendship between Styles and Jenner, one that lasted for years and took them to places like Southern California, Anguilla, and St. Barts.
Harry Styles hinted in a 2017 interview with Rolling Stone that a recent relationship – possibly with Kendall Jenner, following his relationship with Taylor Swift – heavily influenced his album. He explained that sometimes he subtly references an ex in his work, and other times he makes the connection very obvious, hoping they understand it’s a personal message.

Any photos circulating over the years that seemed to show Harry and Louis – or “Larry,” as fans nicknamed them – kissing were not real.
Harry Styles pointed out that a photo of him and Louis Tomlinson circulating online had been altered. He explained on the Australian show Sunrise that the original picture, which appeared in a magazine, actually included another woman in the shot.
Louis explained that this had happened to him and Niall too. He described how, when someone is being targeted, others will often isolate them. He admitted it was a surprisingly effective tactic.

Harry first brought up the idea of One Direction taking a break in 2014, while the band was recording in a London studio – a setting reminiscent of The Beatles.
I’ve been a huge fan for years, and I always understood why they made the choices they did. The frontman explained to Rolling Stone that they really cared about their fans and didn’t want to wear us out by constantly touring. He said it would have been easy to just keep going for the money, but they respected the band – and us – too much for that. They knew if they pushed themselves too hard, they’d lose that special connection with everyone, and honestly, I really appreciated that they thought about it that way.

Zayn’s friends supported his decision, and he took the first step in leaving the group in March 2015. This came after he’d been dealing with anxiety and problems in his relationship with Perrie Edwards, fueled by tabloid rumors of infidelity.
After Zayn Malik left, the remaining members of One Direction announced in August that they would be taking a break, preparing their fans for the news. Their final concert was held on October 31, 2015, at the Sheffield Arena in Britain – a particularly sad night for their dedicated fanbase.

After Zayn Malik said One Direction’s songs weren’t very cool—specifically, that he wouldn’t put them on while trying to impress someone on a date—Harry responded calmly and avoided any conflict.
Styles told Rolling Stone that while he was saddened by the other person’s feelings, he always wants the best for people pursuing their passions.
If you’re unhappy with something, it’s perfectly okay to switch to something you enjoy. I’m happy for him that he’s pursuing his passions, and I wish him all the best.

He explained to Rolling Stone that he didn’t want to just write fiction for his first solo album, aptly named Harry Styles. He wanted to share his personal experiences – his own stories. Being honest was his main goal, as he hadn’t really done that in his music before.
That being said, the game was on when it came to figuring out what, or who, he was singing about.
Harry explained that he deliberately keeps his personal and professional lives separate. He believes this helps him maintain a healthy balance and stay grounded. He isn’t trying to create a persona or extend his career; he simply wants to be himself, both at work and at home. He feels it’s important to have boundaries and enjoys the contrast between his different roles. He finds this balance incredibly fulfilling.

The songwriter explained to Rolling Stone that the song is told from the perspective of a mother experiencing a difficult childbirth. She’s told her baby is healthy, but she doesn’t have much time left to live. The song focuses on those final five minutes, where she urges her child to live a full and successful life.

Okay, seriously, Harry Styles’ hair is just… perfection, no matter what he does with it. I was reading this article, and it blew my mind! They actually counted everything on his dressing table before a show in Paris – seven different hair products! Can you believe it? And it wasn’t just hair stuff, he had this amazing Tom Ford perfume, a Diptyque candle, and this fancy Sunday Riley face oil too. It just proves how much effort he puts into everything, and honestly, it shows. I need to know his routine!
Vogue beauty editor Lisa Niven playfully pointed out that Harry seems to have the skincare routine of a professional beauty editor, praising his use of Ouai hair products and especially the Sunday Riley oil. She added with a smile that everyone would request a Diptyque candle as part of their backstage requests.
Only a few million people noticed his haircut before he began actively promoting his music again.
He told Vogue he initially felt vulnerable after deciding to shave his head. He explained it wasn’t a difficult choice, and the hair was ultimately used to create a wig.

It’s a fact that Harry has six nipples – the usual two, plus an extra pair located just below them.

When Harry was in One Direction, he was known for his casual style – tight pants and wrinkled T-shirts. But since then, he’s completely transformed his look, now favoring sharply tailored suits, stylish jackets, and other fashion-forward outfits. He’s even become a face of Gucci, starring in two of their advertising campaigns.
Harry Styles shared with Entertainment Tonight that Shania Twain was a major influence on both his music and his sense of style, calling her ‘amazing’.
Wait, what?
Growing up in the ’90s, I heard a lot of Shania Twain, Norah Jones, and Savage Garden thanks to my mom, Anne. Meanwhile, my dad, Des, was teaching me everything about rock and roll.

While pursuing his music, Harry Styles began his acting career in Christopher Nolan’s epic World War II film, Dunkirk, released in July 2017. The movie was a critical success, receiving eight Academy Award nominations and winning three.
Harry Styles said that auditioning for Christopher Nolan was more difficult than auditioning for Simon Cowell. He explained on ITV’s This Morning that Nolan is very reserved – he doesn’t offer any feedback during the audition, just silently observes from the back of the room. Styles described the experience as incredibly intense, saying he’d constantly replay the audition in his mind, worrying about whether Nolan approved.
At least he could rest assured that Nolan wasn’t giving him special treatment.
The director admitted they hadn’t fully realized how well-known Harry was at the time of casting. While their children had mentioned him, it hadn’t really registered. Ultimately, they chose Harry for the role because he was a perfect fit and completely deserved it based on his audition.
Styles admitted that walking onto the set of a big-budget war epic was a bit intimidating at first.
He told The Big Issue that he was immediately struck by how large the production was. “You walk onto set the first day and are just overwhelmed by everything,” he said. It was also a challenge just to stay safe – he literally had to learn to swim for his first movie role.
One particularly intense scene involved Harry Styles’ character, Alex, nearly drowning. Styles told USA Today that filming the scene was genuinely frightening, as he was acutely aware of how long he could hold his breath. He recalled being asked about his swimming ability the day before filming began in France, noting that the shoot involved a lot of time in the water – almost to the point where it felt like they were testing how long he could stay afloat before actually drowning.

And…he’s funny, too.
In 2017, Harry Styles was everywhere promoting his music, but he also proved to be a natural host when he filled in for James Corden on The Late, Late Show – he even handled the American-style political jokes well! He repeated this role in 2019. Interestingly, years earlier while looking for a house in Hampstead Heath, Harry lived with Late, Late Show executive producer Ben Winston and his wife, Meredith, for almost two years, sleeping on a mattress in their attic.
He was away a lot, being a major pop star, but still.
Styles admitted to being intimidated by Meredith and avoiding bringing dates home. However, Winston recalled that Styles wasn’t always alone and described a constant stream of famous guests who would either stay in the attic or hang out with them. They never talked shop, and Styles would act as if his recent, massive concerts – playing to 80,000 people for three nights straight in Rio – were no big deal.
In 2017, while performing as the musical guest on Saturday Night Live with Jimmy Fallon hosting, Harry Styles playfully impersonated Mick Jagger. Then, in July 2018, he jokingly told Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show that he’d like to host the show himself. Fallon playfully acted as if he’d collapsed, letting Harry comfortably take over as host behind the desk.
Styles returned to SNL as host and musical guest in 2019 and crushed it.

CBS’s Happy Together, which marked Harry Styles’ debut as an executive producer on American network television, wasn’t renewed after its first season of 13 episodes.

After his first solo tour wrapped up in July 2018—having sold nearly 1 million tickets across 89 shows—a total of $1.2 million was donated to charity. This amount came from a portion of the tour’s profits, as well as contributions from Live Nation and the GLSEN PRIDE campaign.

Harry Styles’ career soared after he won his first Grammy in 2021 for his song “Watermelon Sugar,” and nothing seemed able to stop him. Two years later, his album Harry’s House earned him two more Grammys in a row, including the prestigious Album of the Year award. When accepting the Album of the Year trophy, he humbly shared, “This is a rare honor for someone like me, and it feels amazing.”

Harry’s accomplishments extend beyond his Grammy win. In 2020, he made history as the first solo male artist to appear on the cover of Vogue magazine.

Harry also writes songs for other artists. Besides his own music, he co-wrote Ariana Grande’s popular song “Just a Little Bit of Your Heart,” and the song “Someday” performed by Meghan Trainor and Michael Bublé.

Most people know Harry Styles as a singer and actor – he even appeared in Olivia Wilde’s film, Don’t Worry Darling – but he considered other career paths too. In a 2020 interview with Ellen DeGeneres, he revealed he would have loved to be a florist if music hadn’t worked out.
He also briefly considered becoming a physiotherapist. He shared on BBC Radio 2’s The Zoe Ball Breakfast Show that he initially wanted to be a footballer, but when he realized he wasn’t skilled enough, he thought physiotherapy would be a good fit. However, a career advisor at school told him there weren’t many jobs available in that field, so he ultimately pursued music instead.
