Hasbro Gets Toy Deal to Coincide with Henry Cavill ‘Voltron’ Movie

Okay, Voltron fans, there’s a glimmer of hope for that Henry Cavill movie we’ve been waiting for! Hasbro just announced they’ve partnered with Amazon MGM Studios to make toys and action figures based on the live-action adaptation. Now, I’ve been covering this industry for a while, and a big toy deal like this usually means a movie is heading to theaters. It doesn’t guarantee anything, but it’s a really encouraging sign that we might actually see Voltron on the big screen!

As a movie critic, I’ve been following the Voltron film closely, and it’s a relief to finally have some solid news. For a while, there were whispers that it might skip theaters and head straight to streaming, but this recent update feels like a real step forward – the first one in a while, actually.

A Franchise-Focused Future

In 2022, Amazon MGM Studios obtained the rights to Voltron, but Henry Cavill wasn’t involved until October 2024. The upcoming project will be based on the well-known 1980s anime featuring a team of space explorers who combine their robotic lions to form the giant super robot, Voltron. The original animated series lasted two seasons and spawned three spin-offs, expanding into comic books, toys, and video games. Even though it originally aired briefly, Voltron has stayed popular over the years thanks to reboots, merchandise, and recent revivals on streaming platforms.

Hasbro’s plan to launch toys at the same time as the new movie fits into their overall strategy for the franchise, explained Tim Kilpin, head of Toys, Licensing, and Entertainment. He believes working with Amazon MGM Studios will help the franchise last for years to come and attract both existing fans and new viewers.

As a big Voltron fan, I’ve been really encouraged by something Joaquim Dos Santos – Kilpin, as many of us call him – said about “longevity.” It sounds like the studio has a long-term vision for the franchise, which is great news. Plus, Hasbro, who now owns the property, usually likes to build things up with big theatrical releases – they’ve done it with G.I. Joe and Transformers before. So, a lot of us are hoping Amazon MGM will give Voltron the same kind of treatment and get it onto the big screen!

Amazon MGM also has another live-action remake planned for a big movie theater release.

The Nostalgia Factor

Okay, so the trailer for the new Masters of the Universe movie – hitting theaters June 5th – is blowing up, and that’s a really good sign. It seems Amazon MGM is actually serious about putting more movies in theaters, which is awesome. As someone who grew up with these cartoons, it’s hitting all the right nostalgia buttons – kind of like Voltron did. Honestly, if Masters of the Universe does well, I think it’ll be a great indicator that there’s still an audience for these classic properties and could mean good things for a potential Voltron movie too!

Release Strategy and Box Office Outlook

Amazon MGM Studios hasn’t announced when Voltron will be released. But a deal to sell toys through Hasbro hints that marketing efforts might be starting, even though the movie is still being finished.

Rawson Marshall Thurber, the director of Red Notice, also co-wrote and directed Voltron. The movie stars Henry Cavill, along with Sterling K. Brown, Alba Baptista, Rita Ora, and others. Cavill, who will soon appear in Chad Stahelski’s Highlander, continues to be a popular actor who attracts audiences beyond just fans of Voltron.

Although a release that combines theaters with streaming isn’t impossible, the deal with Hasbro suggests the studio is taking this film very seriously. Like with Masters of the Universe, Amazon seems interested in reviving popular, older brands that can also sell a lot of merchandise. Considering Hasbro’s focus on building long-lasting franchises and their experience with big theatrical releases, a traditional movie theater release seems most likely.
