It’s 2035, and as December ends, you ask your AI assistant to create a year-end summary of everything you’ve achieved – even the tasks you handled personally. The AI neatly prepares a performance review and sends it to your manager, who, surprisingly, will actually read it themselves instead of feeding it into another AI.
One AI told another that you’re a great worker, so you’re getting promoted and a raise! Your manager also sent a note saying you helped the team work better together and achieve important goals.
I say this partly in jest, but a situation like this doesn’t seem that unlikely – particularly since Microsoft is now actively promoting the use of Copilot to help with annual performance reviews. Their recent blog highlighted this, stating:
Copilot can help you communicate effectively at work. It offers suggestions for having productive conversations with your boss and colleagues, whether you’re discussing your objectives, negotiating compensation, or tackling difficult topics like company changes or performance issues.
Putting aside the jokes, Copilot can really help during review time. I find it useful for coming up with project ideas, anticipating reader questions, and checking if my writing fully covers a topic.
AI tools like Copilot can be really helpful, but I worry people might start depending on them too much. It’s becoming common to see AI-written articles and posts online, and I’ve even noticed friends using ChatGPT to write simple things like texts asking to join a sports team.
A recent Microsoft blog post showcases a good example of how people can work *with* AI. The post highlights clear, detailed requests given to Copilot, which helps avoid the kind of inaccurate or nonsensical responses sometimes called ‘hallucinations’.
Copilot can also make feedback easier to understand and deliver. Giving criticism can be tricky, particularly when addressing a manager or someone from another team. Simply share your thoughts with Copilot, and it can create a polished, professional response for you.
I recommend using AI as a tool to *help* you prepare for your performance review, rather than letting it write it for you. AI like Copilot can predict the questions your manager might ask, help you identify important points to discuss, and create a summary of your accomplishments.
It’s usually better to bring notes to meetings, rather than relying on a fully written-out script, especially one generated by AI tools like Copilot.
