Hayden Panettiere Says She Was Put in Bed With “Undressed” Man at 18

Hayden Panettiere is looking back at a traumatic experience.

The former star of Heroes claims that when she was 18, a more experienced actor almost forced her to engage in sexual activity during a boat party. She has not revealed the identity of the other person involved.

Looking back at my 18-year-old self, I definitely thought I had it all figured out! I believed I was making smart, safe choices, but honestly, I wasn’t truly seeing the bigger picture. It’s funny how you can think you’re aware, but still miss so much of what’s happening around you. I shared this recently on the On Purpose With Jay Shetty podcast – it’s a big part of growing up, realizing you have a lot more to learn.

I didn’t understand how much danger I was in until things started going wrong,” she said. “By the time I finally realized it, I was already far out at sea.

The woman, 36, said she was enjoying the party when she was asked to meet a famous person, but she didn’t reveal who it was.

“It took me by surprise,” she said. “It was somebody led by somebody that I had grown to trust and see as a protector and somebody who had my back. To be walked down the stairs, it was presented as though it was a surprise.”

Hayden described being put in a small room with a famous, undressed man. She said he was lying in bed with his hands behind his head, and that this kind of thing happened to him frequently – it was apparently a normal occurrence for him.

The actress from I Love You, Beth Cooper, who shares more about the incident in her upcoming memoir, This Is Me: A Reckoning, explained that she was frightened, but ready to protect herself.

She remembered feeling incredibly angry and determined. ‘I couldn’t believe this was happening,’ she said. But with no place to escape, she ran and sought shelter anywhere she could find on the boat.

She went on to explain that no one offered help or understanding. They weren’t surprised by what was happening; it was all too familiar to them.

One of the worst consequences was the shattered trust between her and the person she loved, the one who had led her down the stairs.

“It’s disappointing when somebody lets you down like that,” Hayden added, “I’d been let down so much before and then when you find somebody.”

She explained that once you find someone you truly trust, you cherish them. Being betrayed by that person is incredibly painful.
