HBO Confirms Harry Potter Season 2 Scripts In Development

HBO recently shared news about the second season of Harry Potter, despite the fact that they are still filming the first. Viewers watched Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, Emma Watson, and the other young actors mature throughout the Harry Potter films. The changes in the cast’s appearances as they grew from children to teenagers and adults were often quite noticeable.

During a presentation about upcoming HBO shows, CEO Casey Bloys discussed plans for the Harry Potter TV series after its first season. He explained that a key priority is minimizing the time between filming seasons, both to avoid significant changes in the young actors’ appearances and to keep the show’s continuity smooth for viewers. The goal is to prevent noticeable aging of the cast and jarring transitions between seasons.

We’re currently filming the first season and are already working on the script for season two. While we can’t immediately move from filming one season to the next, we’re aiming for a short break between them. We want to avoid long delays both for the young actors and for our audience. It’s a large-scale production with a lot of visual effects, so it’s complex, but we’ll do our best to keep things moving quickly.

Bloys shared that scripts for the second season of Harry Potter are currently being written, though they haven’t finalized when production will begin.

It’s now typical for TV shows on cable and streaming platforms to have long delays between seasons. This creates a problem when the show eventually returns, because the young actors age quickly during those breaks, making it hard to believe they’re still the same age as their characters.

The popularity of Netflix’s Stranger Things clearly shows how quickly young actors can grow up on screen. When the first season was filmed, stars like Finn Wolfhard, Millie Bobby Brown, Gaten Matarazzo, Caleb McLaughlin, and Noah Schnapp were very young – either early or pre-teens. Now, as the fifth and final season is released, those same actors are all adults, yet they’re still portraying teenage characters.

Although Stranger Things only has five seasons, it’s taken nearly ten years to release them all. Production faced unavoidable setbacks, including the COVID-19 pandemic and the Hollywood strikes, which caused delays. Similarly, Isaac Ordonez, who plays Pugsley Addams, grew significantly between seasons of Wednesday, contributing to the show’s three-year gap between releases.

The upcoming Harry Potter series is planned to film its second season very quickly after the first wraps in spring 2026. This is because the young actors playing the characters need to still look like children – the characters are eleven years old in season one and twelve in season two.

The young actors playing Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, and Hermione Granger in the new TV series – Dominic McLaughlin, Alastair Stout, and Arabella Stanton – are all around 11 years old, which is perfect for the characters. However, if there are long gaps between filming seasons, they will likely grow older than the ages of the characters they portray.

Casey Bloys’ comments on the scripts being developed match what we’ve heard about the filming timeline. The HBO executive also promised they’re working hard to avoid the problems that plagued Stranger Things with the new Harry Potter series. It sounds like they’re taking lessons from other shows’ mistakes to ensure viewers have a positive experience.

The first season of the new Harry Potter series is planned to debut in 2027. If filming starts promptly next year, we might see the second season in 2028. However, it remains to be seen if the production team can maintain this pace, or if the release schedule will be stretched out like it was with the original films.
