Throughout the 2010s, the Marvel Cinematic Universe became incredibly popular and easily drew in highly talented actors. Many actors who’ve become known for their roles in Marvel films have also received Oscar nominations or wins for other, non-superhero projects, showing that Marvel has a knack for spotting great talent. Mark Ruffalo is one of the most acclaimed actors working with Marvel, balancing his role as the Hulk with critically-respected films like Spotlight and Poor Things for the past sixteen years. He’s been nominated for an Oscar four times, but hasn’t won yet. Mahershala Ali, who already has two Oscars, is another talented Marvel actor, and he’s now teaming up with Ruffalo for a new project—though this one isn’t connected to the Marvel Universe.
As reported by Deadline, Ali will join the cast of Task for its second season. He will play Eddie Barnes, an experienced and highly-regarded DEA agent in Philadelphia whose team clashes with the unit led by Tom. Mark Ruffalo will return as Agent Tom Brandis, now leading a new task force.
Will Mahershala Ali & Mark Ruffalo Ever Come Together in the MCU?

Mahershala Ali taking on another new film role – this time with a well-known actor from the Marvel universe (he previously starred with Scarlett Johansson in Jurassic World Rebirth) – will likely bring renewed criticism about how Marvel has used him so far. After a strong performance as Cottonmouth in Luke Cage, Ali was expected to play a major part in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as the lead in the Blade reboot. Announced at Comic-Con in 2019, the film has faced significant delays as Marvel struggled to finalize the script. Recent reports suggest Blade may be canceled altogether, with the character potentially debuting in a team-up movie like Midnight Sons instead.
Because it’s taken Marvel so long to officially introduce Blade into the MCU (aside from a brief voice appearance in Eternals), the opportunity to pair Mahershala Ali with Mark Ruffalo in a project might have passed. It’s improbable that Blade will appear during the current Multiverse Saga, which ends next year with Avengers: Secret Wars. While it’s unclear if Ruffalo will return as Bruce Banner/Hulk in the next Avengers films, it wouldn’t be surprising if one of the original Avengers had a part to play. Beyond Secret Wars, Ruffalo’s future with the MCU is uncertain, as Marvel seems to be using that film to simplify the storyline and start fresh.
Marvel is carefully selecting which characters and actors will continue into the next phase of its cinematic universe. Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk is popular with fans, so he might stay on, potentially leading to a team-up with Blade in future movies. However, this depends on the stories Marvel chooses to tell and which characters they prioritize. To keep the MCU fresh and successful, new heroes will eventually need to take center stage. While Ruffalo is currently still playing the Hulk, his time in the role won’t last forever.
It’s unfortunate Mark Ruffalo and Mahershala Ali haven’t shared a scene in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. They’re both incredibly talented actors who could have created a fascinating relationship between their characters. Luckily, fans can see a bit of what that might have looked like in Task, a critically acclaimed TV show from 2025. Task was praised for its intense plot and excellent acting, making it a perfect fit for an actor like Ali, who thrives in dramatic, high-pressure roles.
