HBO Max is trying to become a major player in the competitive world of anime streaming, but it has some catching up to do with platforms like Crunchyroll, Netflix, and Hulu. Crunchyroll leads the way by focusing solely on anime, and even services like Hulu and Netflix are now producing their own exclusive anime series. HBO Max has already offered some anime exclusives, including popular films like Your Name and the Studio Ghibli catalog. Now, Warner Bros. is adding to that by reimagining one of its classic animated franchises as a brand new anime series, available to stream now.
I recently came across Tom and Jerry Gokko, and it’s a really interesting take on the classic cartoon. It’s an anime adaptation – the first time Tom and Jerry have been given that style! It originally appeared in Japan in 2022, and several episodes are now available on YouTube. Warner Bros Japan describes it as keeping the fast-paced, funny chase scenes we love, but adding a really cute, Japanese aesthetic. The characters – Tom, Jerry, and even Tafi – are redesigned to be adorable, and they even transform into food sometimes! It’s a surprisingly fresh and visually appealing series.
Warner Bros’ Anime Investment

The new anime version of Tom and Jerry isn’t the only way Warner Bros. is getting involved with anime. Last year, they collaborated with Wit Studio (known for shows like Attack on Titan, Spy x Family, and Ranking of Kings) to create Suicide Squad Isekai, giving DC Comics villains an anime-style transformation. Although a second season hasn’t been announced, and there are no current plans for other DC characters to get the anime treatment, this demonstrates Warner Bros.’s understanding of anime’s popularity and potential.
Warner Bros. Discovery announced last year they intended to significantly increase their investment in anime. Their Asia-Pacific president stated the studio aimed to produce over ten anime series annually, expanding from their previous output of five to ten. With Warner Bros. now being sold, it remains to be seen how this will impact their anime plans – whether the investment will increase or decrease. Given anime’s growing popularity, it’s likely the investment will continue to grow.
