I’m truly disheartened to share that my beloved crime drama, “Duster,” has been axed by HBO Max after just one season. Co-created and masterfully steered by LaToya Morgan and J.J. Abrams, this series endured years of development, battling numerous setbacks along the way. Unfortunately, despite all our hopes, it seems the show didn’t find its home on HBO Max, with the cancellation announced a week after the season finale aired. Both HBO Max and Warner Bros. Television, in statements published by Variety, commended the hard work of the talented cast and crew. Some ardent fans have already started advocating for another streaming platform to rescue this series, but as of now, there’s no whisper of such a possibility.
In a different wording, “Duster” is a gripping crime thriller that unfolds in the American southwest during 1972. It revolves around the groundbreaking character of Nina Hayes (played by Rachel Hilson), the first Black woman FBI agent, as she tirelessly pursues notorious criminal kingpin Ezra Saxton (portrayed by Keith David). Alongside her, she receives assistance from former getaway driver-turned-informant Jim Ellis (Josh Holloway). Over its eight-episode run, Abrams and Morgan co-wrote three of these episodes.
Although HBO Max won’t be producing another season of Duster, we’re deeply appreciative for the opportunity to collaborate with the brilliant minds behind the scenes, J.J. Abrams and LaToya Morgan, as well as our partners at Bad Robot and Warner Bros. Television. We take great pride in this series starring Josh Holloway and Rachel Hilson, and we want to express our gratitude to them, our cast, and our crew for their outstanding work and partnership.
J.J. Abrams and LaToya Morgan crafted a captivating, multi-layered crime drama titled Duster, set in the 1970s with richly developed characters that immersed viewers in an unique and refreshing fashion, according to WBTV. The characters were brilliantly portrayed by Josh, Rachel, and a talented cast ensemble, under the guidance of a skilled crew off-screen. We are incredibly proud of this series, although we wish it could go on longer, we are grateful to our collaborators at HBO Max for allowing us to tell Jim and Nina’s story.
In 2019, Duster became involved with the projects of Morgan and Abrams through Warner Bros., working together via Abrams’ production company, Bad Robot. However, several projects under this agreement, including “Justice League Dark” and a series based on Stephen King’s “The Shining,” failed to materialize. Interestingly, Abrams’ “Batman: Caped Crusader” was initially part of this deal but eventually transitioned to Amazon Prime Video when it was broadcast.
Abrams and Morgan find themselves occupied with other ventures, leaving some viewers optimistic that the series Duster might be picked up elsewhere. For the time being, however, you can catch the sole season of this show on HBO Max.
