HBO Max Finally Brings A Cult DC Movie Back To Streaming (With The Sequel On The Way)

It’s fantastic when a comic book gets turned into a show on a popular streaming platform, particularly when that comic has a dedicated fanbase. It’s even more exciting to see a sequel finally happening after twenty years, all because the lead actor persistently championed the project.

As a huge fan of dark, supernatural thrillers, I was thrilled to see Constantine finally hit HBO Max! It’s based on the classic DC Hellblazer comics and stars Keanu Reeves as John Constantine, a really compelling character. The story kicks off with Constantine having already faced the ultimate low – he tried to take his own life and actually went to Hell. Now, he knows he’s destined for damnation unless he can somehow redeem himself. The movie follows him as he teams up with a cop, Angela Dodson (Rachel Weisz), to investigate a supposed suicide, and they quickly get pulled into this massive battle between Heaven and Hell. It’s a really engaging ride!

The Movie Deserves More Than A Cult Following

Critics weren’t impressed with the movie, finding it uninspired except for a few moments. However, most viewers enjoyed it, feeling it honored the character’s story and warranted a sequel. Leigh Paatsch of the Herald Sun gave it a 2/5 star rating, praising a few intense scenes but calling the rest forgettable. Drew Dietsch from Giant Freakin Robot countered that the movie deserves a dedicated fanbase and should be appreciated for its strengths, not criticized for its weaknesses.

Keanu Reeves, along with the original director Francis Lawrence, have been discussing a potential sequel with James Gunn. Gunn confirmed they’ve talked about it, praising the team’s talent, but hasn’t seen a script yet. Reeves explained they recently presented a story idea to DC Studios, who gave them the go-ahead to start writing. Lawrence added that they’ve been exploring comic book material for years, and the story has been developing in their minds for two decades, drawing on characters and ideas they’re passionate about.
