If you’re an HBO Max subscriber, you have until December 31st to watch the horror film It Follows. Written and directed by David Robert Mitchell, the movie follows Jay, who after a sexual encounter, finds herself haunted by a terrifying, shape-shifting entity. She’s forced to find a way to break the curse and escape its relentless pursuit.
It Follows Is One of the Best Modern Horror Films, and It’s Finally Getting a Sequel
The horror film It Follows is widely considered a modern classic, and it’s easy to understand why. It received a “Certified Fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes with a 95% approval score from critics and continues to be praised years later. Director David Mitchell successfully updated the familiar horror concept of a deadly curse, creating a film with carefully composed shots, a constant sense of dread, and a focus on building suspense rather than relying on sudden scares. Beyond its striking visuals and inventive story, It Follows is also remembered for Richard Vreeland’s memorable score, which captures the feel of 1980s horror films and is often compared to the work of John Carpenter.
The critically acclaimed horror film It Follows is filled with rich details and meaning, making its removal from HBO Max particularly disappointing – especially considering a sequel was announced. In October 2024, Neon revealed that They Follow is officially happening, with writer and director David Mitchell returning. Maika Monroe, who starred in the original It Follows, will also be back as Jay Height. Monroe recently told Decider that filming is planned for sometime next year and that the script is “exceptional” and will likely please fans. A release date for They Follow hasn’t been announced yet.
