HBO Max Just Added One of the Best Sci-Fi Movies of the Last Decade

Science fiction movies are enjoying a major resurgence in the 21st century, and the 2020s are shaping up to be a particularly strong period for the genre. We’ve seen everything from huge, visually stunning films like Avatar: The Way of Water and Tenet, to innovative and unique movies like Nope and The Substance. Sci-fi is clearly doing well, and now fans on HBO Max can stream one of the decade’s best sci-fi films.

The critically acclaimed movie Everything Everywhere All at Once, which won an Oscar in 2022, is now streaming on HBO Max. Starring Michelle Yeoh, Stephanie Hsu, Ke Huy Quan, James Hong, and Jamie Lee Curtis, the film became available on March 1st, though it’s unknown how long it will remain on the platform. This unique movie combines science fiction, comedy, fantasy, martial arts, and animation in a story about a tired Chinese American mother who must team up with alternate versions of herself to battle strange threats and save the world. It currently boasts a 93% “Certified Fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

What Makes Everything Everywhere All at Once Such Great Sci-Fi?

Many consider Everything Everywhere All at Once to be a sci-fi masterpiece, and rightfully so – it’s even being called one of the greatest sci-fi films of all time. Notably, it’s the first sci-fi movie to win the Best Picture Oscar. What makes it so special is how it balances wildly imaginative, multiverse-spanning concepts with incredibly relatable and emotional human stories. While the idea of infinite universes is exciting and brilliantly done, the film uses it to explore themes like the immigrant experience, family trauma, and the search for purpose. Ultimately, it’s a deeply moving story about a woman, Evelyn, who accesses skills from her alternate selves to save the world.

Beyond its clever use of science fiction, Everything Everywhere All at Once is simply a very entertaining movie. It’s a deeply moving story about human connection, wrapped in wonderfully bizarre and imaginative humor – think universes where people have hotdog fingers or fanny packs are used as weapons! The film is also packed with exciting, fast-paced martial arts action. And the acting is phenomenal, with Michelle Yeoh delivering a standout performance and Ke Huy Quan shining in multiple roles.

What’s New on HBO Max?

HBO Max already has a great selection of shows and movies, and they’ve added even more this month! You can now stream titles like Crazy, Stupid, Love, all the Final Destination movies, Little Miss Sunshine, and several Spider-Man films, with plenty more new content coming throughout March.
