HBO Max is a fantastic place to find horror movies. They have a huge collection, with everything from classic films to recent critically acclaimed hits, and a strong selection from the 2010s. You can stream popular movies like The Witch, Get Out, and The Conjuring on HBO Max, and they’ve just added another standout horror film from that decade.
Just in time for Lee Cronin’s return to theaters with The Mummy this month, his first horror film is now available to stream on HBO Max. The Hole in the Ground, released by A24 in 2019, arrived on the platform April 1st. This supernatural horror movie is a fresh take on the classic myth of the changeling. The story follows Sarah O’Neill, a single mother who moves to the country for a fresh start with her son, Chris. But after Chris acts strangely following a discovery of a large sinkhole in the woods, Sarah begins to fear that the child she knows isn’t her son at all, and has been replaced by something sinister.
Lee Cronin’s The Hole in the Ground Is an Underappreciated Horror Gem
I was really creeped out by The Hole in the Ground – it’s a fantastic country horror that genuinely unsettled me. Critics at The Guardian and Cultured Vultures both said it was a really strong first film for the director. If you like slow-burn, character-focused horror like The Babadook or Hereditary, you’ll love this. It doesn’t rely on cheap jump scares; instead, it builds tension using the old myth of the changeling, and really focuses on the complicated and increasingly strained relationship between a mother and her son. The director did an amazing job creating a suffocating atmosphere with the lonely Irish countryside and this creepy, ominous sinkhole. It’s a movie that really gets under your skin.
I have to admit, this one slipped under the radar for a lot of people, but The Hole in the Ground is a genuinely fantastic horror film. It didn’t have a wide release, but critics absolutely loved it – it scored an 83% on Rotten Tomatoes, making it one of the best horror movies of the decade! In fact, it landed at number 12 for horror films that year and even cracked the top 76 best horror films of the entire decade on Rotten Tomatoes. It was a remarkably strong debut for director Lee Cronin, and it’s no surprise he’s become a major name in the genre. We saw that potential realized with Evil Dead Rise, and he’s not slowing down – he’s got The Mummy and Evil Dead Burn coming up later this year, plus he’s executive producing Evil Dead Wrath. Seriously, keep an eye on this filmmaker – he’s clearly one to watch.
Other Horror Movies Now on HBO Max
HBO Max is a reliable source for horror fans, and they’ve added a lot of new titles this April. Starting April 1st, you can stream the entire Alien franchise and the original The Mummy movies. Throughout the month, even more horror content will be available, including Alien: Romulus on April 3rd and the streaming premiere of Bryan Fuller’s Dust Bunny on April 17th.
