If you’re a fan of the Alien movies, you’ll be happy to know that HBO Max recently added what many consider to be the best cut of the most overlooked film in the series. The Alien franchise has been a staple of sci-fi horror for over 40 years, with six sequels following Ridley Scott’s 1979 classic, but not all of them have resonated with audiences and critics.
The movie Alien 3 often gets criticized within the Alien franchise. It currently has a low score of 44% on Rotten Tomatoes from critics and only 46% from general audiences. Though many consider it the weakest film in the series, the Alien 3: The Assembly Cut is often seen as a much better version and is worth watching. This version was originally released in 2003 as part of the Alien Quadrilogy DVD collection and recently became available on HBO Max alongside other Alien films on April 1st.
Alien 3: Assembly Cut Is Worth Watching
If you don’t think Alien 3 is a very good movie, the Assembly Cut might change your mind. This version fixes many of the problems with the original release, creating a more polished and understandable film. It follows Ripley after her ship crashes on a remote prison planet, where she has to team up with inmates to fight a deadly Xenomorph that snuck aboard. According to Ryan Lambie of Den of Geek, the Assembly Cut is “undoubtedly the better one” – it’s a clearer version of director David Fincher’s vision and makes more sense than the original, even though the initial script had issues.
The Assembly Cut adds about 30 minutes to the film, allowing for greater character development and a more detailed world. It expands scenes to better illustrate the prisoners’ unusual, almost religious way of life and gives characters like Dillon more depth, while also clarifying details about the storm and setting. Some scenes have been swapped out or removed to improve the movie’s flow. This version also includes a different opening and restores some storylines, with a significant change to the aliens themselves – but we won’t reveal that! Overall, the Assembly Cut is a more complete and easier-to-follow version of the film, and it’s well worth watching.
What’s New on HBO Max?
HBO Max is offering a lot of exciting content this April, particularly for fans of the Alien franchise. Along with Alien 3: Assembly Cut, all four original Alien films are available, including special and extended editions. You can also find the Alien vs. Predator and Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem movies. Alien: Romulus was added on April 3rd. Beyond Alien, new additions to HBO Max this month include Maze Runner: The Death Cure, The Hole in the Ground, and The Mummy films.
