HBO Max Sets Major Expansion Of Streaming Service

For a while, HBO Max wasn’t available in many important international areas, but it’s about to become accessible in several more European countries. Launched in 2020 as an upgrade to HBO’s previous streaming service, HBO Max was created to compete with other streaming platforms and offers a wide range of popular content, including original HBO series and other well-known shows.

HBO Max is the streaming home for many of HBO’s most popular and acclaimed TV shows, including hits like Game of Thrones, Succession, and The Last of Us. If you’re following current series such as It: Welcome to Derry, new episodes arrive on the service right after they air on TV. Upcoming seasons of House of the Dragon and the new series A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will also be available there.

As a film buff, I’m really excited about what’s happening with HBO Max, now just Max! Because Warner Bros. Discovery owns HBO, the service has a ton of recent blockbuster movies – I’m talking titles like Weapons, Superman, Sinners, and a whole lot more. Plus, you can find critically acclaimed shows like the Emmy-winning The Pitt, and, of course, all the Harry Potter films. It’s great that so many people will now be able to enjoy these iconic movies and series – it’s a real treasure trove of pop culture!

Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD) has announced that its streaming service, HBO Max, will launch in Germany, Italy, Austria, Switzerland, Luxembourg, and Liechtenstein on January 13, 2026. Viewers in these countries will also be able to watch the Olympic Winter Games Milano Cortina 2026 live on HBO Max, from February 6th to 22nd of next year. HBO Max is already available in over 100 countries worldwide.

As a huge fan of HBO, I’m still waiting for news on when HBO Max will officially launch in the UK and Ireland. Right now, we watch their shows through Sky, but I’m excited for the dedicated streaming service. They’ve also teased some new original series coming soon, which is fantastic, and it’s really cool to see they’re working with creators from all over the world – Germany and Italy were specifically mentioned!

German production company W&B Television is currently developing two new series: 4 Blocks Zero, a prequel to the popular crime drama 4 Blocks, and Banksters, a heist drama inspired by a true story. The Beetz Brothers are also creating a documentary, set for release in 2026, focusing on a famous German robbery. Separately, Jantje Friese and Baran Bo Odar are producing a thriller series for HBO.

As a big fan of international TV, I’m keeping an eye on a bunch of exciting shows coming to HBO Italy. There’s Melania, a true-crime drama about the 2011 murder of Melania Rea, with Maria Esposito in the lead role. Marco Bellocchio is also working on a series called Portobello – that one’s set to premiere in February 2026. And on the documentary side, they’ve got two series in the works: Gina Lollobrigida: Diva Contesa and Saman. Definitely adding those to my watchlist!

HBO Max needs to add more content and fresh shows to stay competitive in the crowded streaming landscape, but it already has a strong base with some of the greatest TV series ever made, which it can now share with a wider audience.
