Marvel and DC Comics pretty much control the world of comic book movies and TV shows, consistently releasing popular and well-regarded blockbusters that make it hard for other companies to succeed. Occasionally, another publisher will create a fantastic comic book movie that’s worth watching. Sadly, one of the best non-Marvel and non-DC adaptations ever made is soon leaving HBO Max.
Hellboy is a 2004 film directed by Guillermo del Toro, based on the Dark Horse Comics series Hellboy: Seed of Destruction. Ron Perlman stars as Hellboy, a demon who was summoned by Nazis during World War II and later saved by Allied troops. Now, he works for the Bureau of Paranormal Research and Defense, protecting the U.S. from supernatural threats. If you’re an HBO Max subscriber and want to watch it, you only have until December 31st, as the movie will be leaving the platform.
Hellboy Is a Great Non-Marvel/DC Comic Book Movie
The Hellboy movie is a standout comic book adaptation. It brilliantly captures the feel of the original comics, even including specific scenes recreated shot-for-shot, while still showcasing Guillermo del Toro’s unique blend of horror, fantasy, and action. Del Toro focused on strong characters and a compelling story, adding humor and emotional depth, and built a remarkably detailed and believable world through impressive visuals, practical effects, and imaginative creature designs that still look great today. Ron Perlman was perfectly cast as Hellboy, bringing the character’s sarcasm, wit, and hidden sensitivity to life in a way that makes him truly likable.
The movie Hellboy was a hit with critics thanks to its close adaptation of the original comic books, compelling characters, and surprisingly emotional story. Ron Perlman’s performance as Hellboy was particularly praised and became iconic. The film earned an 81% “Certified Fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes and launched a four-movie franchise. However, future installments are unlikely. Later films didn’t perform as well, and the most recent, Hellboy: The Crooked Man, received a low 38% critic score and was released directly to streaming platforms instead of theaters.
Where to Stream Hellboy After It Leaves HBO Max?
Good news for fans of the Hellboy movie: it won’t disappear from streaming! While it’s currently available on HBO Max, it will be moving to Netflix on January 1st. This means you’ll still be able to easily watch the comic book adaptation. If you prefer, you can also buy a physical copy of the movie or rent or purchase it from online stores.
