The 2000s saw a surge in animated films, with computer-generated imagery becoming increasingly popular. Disney and Pixar continued to lead the way, and DreamWorks found major success with movies like Shrek. While some films from that decade, such as Monsters, Inc., Finding Nemo, and Ice Age, became well-known classics, many other great animated movies have been largely forgotten. One of these lesser-known gems is about to be removed from HBO Max.
If you’re an HBO Max subscriber and want to watch the animated horror comedy Igor, you only have until tomorrow, November 30th, to do so. The film, a fresh take on the Frankenstein story, is leaving the streaming service. Igor—MGM’s first fully computer-animated movie in over a decade—follows the story of Igor, who decides to become a mad scientist himself and enter the Evil Science Fair. However, his attempt to create the ultimate evil monster is complicated when his creation turns out to be surprisingly kind.
Igor Is the Hidden Gem You Forgot About
Despite a strong start with lots of promotion and even an Annie Award nomination for its character design by Valérie Hadida, the movie Igor didn’t become a lasting hit. It earned only moderate box office numbers and received mixed reviews – currently holding a 40% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. As a result, it’s now largely forgotten but remains a hidden gem for animation fans.
This animated film successfully combines spooky gothic visuals with family-friendly humor, much like the style of Tim Burton. It’s a fresh take on the Frankenstein story, focusing on Igor, a lab assistant who creates a monster with dreams of becoming an actress. The movie is cleverly made, balancing lighthearted moments for kids with enough witty darkness to appeal to adults too. Beautiful animation and a distinct visual style bring the gloomy world of Malaria and its eccentric characters to life, supported by fantastic voice acting from a talented cast including John Cusack, Molly Shannon, Steve Buscemi, and John Cleese.
Despite being a genuinely good movie, Igor didn’t quite catch on with audiences during the animation boom of the 2000s. It’s a really fun and imaginative film that expertly mixes comedy and spooky moments – a hidden animated gem that’s worth revisiting.
Where to Stream Igor After It Leaves HBO Max?
You know, there’s this animated movie called Igor that I really enjoyed, but it seems to be slipping into obscurity. It was on HBO Max, but now that it’s leaving, I’m worried it’ll be hard to find. As of right now, it’s not on any other streaming services, which is a shame! Luckily, you can still rent or buy it, and maybe, just maybe, it’ll pop up on another platform someday. But for now, if you want to watch it after November 30th, you’ll have to look beyond streaming.
