HBO Max Users Have Just Days Left To Watch an Iconic 2000s Kids’ Franchise

If you grew up in the 2000s, you probably remember a lot of great family movies! The decade gave us classics like Freak Friday, Bridge to Terabithia, Shrek, and Finding Nemo. Sadly, some of that nostalgic fun is about to disappear, as a popular kids’ franchise from the 2000s is leaving HBO Max.

The first three Spy Kids movies – Spy Kids, Spy Kids 2: The Island of Lost Dreams, and Spy Kids 3: Game Over – will no longer be available on HBO Max after December 31st. These films starred Alexa Vega and Daryl Sabara as the spy siblings Carmen and Juni Cortez. While the Spy Kids franchise continued with Spy Kids: All the Time in the World in 2011 and Spy Kids: Armageddon in 2023, those later movies aren’t currently on HBO Max.

The Spy Kids Franchise Is Wonderfully Over-The-Top and Chaotic

The Spy Kids movies are so successful because they’re wonderfully weird. Director Robert Rodriguez created a series that brilliantly combines genuine family moments with over-the-top spy action and incredibly imaginative ideas. You can feel his unique creative stamp everywhere. From silly CGI and crazy gadgets – like bubble gum disguised as chewing gum and cars that can transform – to memorable characters like the Thumb Thumb minions and wild storylines about TV hosts turning spies into monsters or characters entering video games, the Spy Kids films have everything. It all blends together with a uniquely energetic and imaginative spirit that’s hard to replicate.

The Spy Kids films were unique for portraying children as the heroes while adults were often left in the dark. What’s surprising is the incredible cast involved! The original three movies feature Danny Trejo, Alan Cumming, Cheech Marin, Antonio Banderas, and Carla Gugino, alongside appearances by George Clooney, Holland Taylor, Steve Buscemi, and Bill Paxton. The third film, Spy Kids 3, was particularly ambitious with its 3D effects and included Sylvester Stallone as the villain, along with cameos from Elijah Wood and Salma Hayek.

The first two Spy Kids movies were well-received by critics, earning a “Certified Fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes. However, Spy Kids 3 saw a noticeable decline in quality, with a critic score of just 45

Where to Stream the Spy Kids Franchise After It Leaves HBO Max?

It will become harder to find the original Spy Kids movies online soon. The first three films are leaving HBO Max at the end of the month and aren’t currently available on any other major streaming services – it’s unknown if they’ll be added to another platform in January. The fourth and fifth movies are still available to stream, but on different services: Spy Kids: All the Time in the World is on Pluto TV, and Spy Kids: Armageddon is on Netflix.
