HBO Max Users Have Less Than a Week Left To Watch One of Stephen King’s Best Movies

Just as HBO Max is releasing a new Stephen King adaptation, It: Welcome to Derry, on October 26th, the streaming service is removing another King title. While HBO Max has a large collection of King’s work, including the original It miniseries and films like The Shining and Christine, they’re taking one popular adaptation off the platform. Subscribers have only a few days left to watch it before it’s gone.

Rob Reiner’s 1990 thriller, Misery, based on the Stephen King novel of the same name, will leave HBO Max on October 31st. The film delves into the frightening side of obsessive fandom, starring Kathy Bates as Annie Wilkes, a former nurse and devoted fan of author Paul Sheldon (James Caan). After Paul suffers a severe car accident, Annie rescues him and holds him captive in her isolated cabin, compelling him to write a new story to satisfy her.

Why You Should Watch Misery

While many of Stephen King’s stories have been adapted well, Misery is often considered one of the very best. The film closely follows the book, with only a few changes, and truly captures the intense psychological horror of the original. Director Rob Reiner skillfully builds a feeling of dread and confinement through the film’s setting and pacing, keeping audiences gripped. James Caan and Kathy Bates both give remarkable performances, with Bates being particularly memorable as Annie, flawlessly portraying the character’s obsessive and unpredictable behavior. Even years later, Misery stands out as a classic and a high standard for psychological thrillers.

This film is a critically acclaimed adaptation of Stephen King’s work, boasting a 91% ‘Certified Fresh’ score and a 90% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes. It ranks among the best King adaptations, just behind classics like Chain Reaction, Carrie, and Stand By Me. Notably, it’s the only King adaptation to win an Oscar – with an Academy Award for Best Actress – and one of the rare horror films to ever receive the honor, joining titles such as The Silence of the Lambs and Get Out.

Where to Stream Misery After It Leaves HBO Max

It’s particularly frustrating that Misery is leaving HBO Max right now. It’s the perfect time for spooky movies, and Stephen King’s work is popular again with the recent release of It: Welcome to Derry and several other adaptations on the way, including a new version of The Running Man scheduled for November 14, 2025.

If you’re looking to watch the movie Misery, it’s currently only available for streaming on HBO Max. While it might move to another streaming service later, it’s too soon to know if it will be on a major platform next month, as streaming schedules for November 2025 are just being announced. You can still rent or buy the film on demand.
