Bruce Lee helped create many famous martial arts films and shows. One of these, which aired after he passed away, is moving to a new streaming service.
Bruce Lee first imagined the idea for Warrior in the early 1970s, but it didn’t come to life until the mid-2010s. That’s when his daughter, Shannon Lee, worked with Jonathan Tropper, the creator of Banshee, to develop the show for Cinemax, and later HBO Max. The series stars Andrew Koji, known from Bullet Train, and is set in 1870s San Francisco, a time of intense conflict between rival Chinese gangs known as the Tong Wars. It follows Ah Sahm, a skilled martial artist, as he searches for his sister while caught in the middle of this dangerous criminal world.
Okay, so this is a bummer for those of us who’ve been loving Warrior on Netflix. Apparently, after about seven years, it’s getting pulled from the platform on February 16th. Don’t worry, though! It’s not gone forever. The show, created by Justin Lin, is heading back to its original home – HBO Max, where the third and final season already landed. So, if you’re a fan, you’ll still be able to watch it, just not on Netflix anymore.
Featuring Olivia Cheng (known from The Stand), Jason Tobin (A Thousand Blows), and Dianne Doan (Descendants), Warrior did well over its three seasons. It began with a good 79% rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, and its second and third seasons were even more highly praised, each earning a perfect 100% score. While the show had decent viewership on Cinemax, the network was struggling with original programming at the time, ultimately leading to its cancellation after season three.
Even though it was canceled, Warrior has found a strong audience on streaming platforms in recent years. Netflix started streaming the martial arts series in 2023, and it quickly became a Top 10 hit. This sparked a lot of requests for Netflix to bring the show back – similar to what they did with Lucifer, Designated Survivor, and Manifest – including a request from Tobin.
Although fans were hoping for more, actor Joe Taslim recently confirmed that season 3 will be the final season of Warrior. He explained that Netflix hasn’t renewed the show, meaning the story won’t continue. With Warrior leaving Netflix soon, it’s very unlikely the series will return in the future.
There’s still a chance the show Warrior could return, thanks to Netflix’s upcoming acquisition of Warner Bros. and its content. While Netflix plans to keep HBO Max separate for now, if they eventually combine the streaming services, they might re-evaluate how well Warrior performed on both platforms and decide to revive it.
